rabbit lifespans

touie

Wise Old Thumper
sorry bit of a morbid topic but I was just interested. All my rabbits have passed away at a fairly young age and I was wondering if that is common or if I have just been unlucky with the rabbits I have had or done something desperately wrong :?

Could you post the age in years that your rabbits passed away to see if there is a trend? (if you know their exact age)

mine are
4 (flystrike while not in my care)
2 (ultimately pneumonia but was ill already cause unknown)
5 (found dead in run reason unknown)
4 (bone disease)
1 (died under anaesthetic during spay)
3 (immobility and breathing problems)

Benji-9, found dead in hutch, suspect heart attack?
Samwise- not sure but about 6 I think, after about his 6th GA for dental and abscesses.
Rosie- about 6 I think, blood in urine, although now wonder if it was uterine cancer. Died while we were doing tests.
Clover- 5, don't know cause of death, died at vets.
Daisy- 9 months, clostridium, severe diarrhoea.
Bramble- 5, paralysis in back legs, then neurological problems.
Fudge- 1, found dead in hutch.
Scotty- 1, found dead in hutch.
Smokey- about 4-5, at a rough guess. Severe breathing problems, then developed a head tilt.
Gertie -6, found prostrate in hutch, died at vets, the vet thinks she may have had a fall.
Bertha- 6, uterine cancer.
Kizzy- 9, internal problems, not sure what.

I look like an awful pet owner reading this.:(.

My bunnies at the Bridge died at this age:

Casper - 3 months old (GI stasis, cause unknown, was ill when I got him)
Toby - 2.5 (cause unknown even after pm)
Apollo - 2.5 (liver torsion)
Lancelot - 1 (cause unknown even after pm)
Star - 3 months old (myxi, was ill when I got her)
Pippa - 7.5 (after big ear abscess operation)
Angel - 4 (cause unkown even after pm)
Sunny - 8 (cancer)
River - 2 (choking on pellets)
Charlie - 8.5 (neurological/brain disease)

My current bunnies are this age:

Benji - 10.5
Dakota - 4 to 5
Magic - 5
Alaska - 3
Tommy - unknown
Trystane - 3

So I have had a wide range from two bunnies dieing when they were tiny (both were ill when I got them) to youngish ones to really old ones. :)

I am new to keeping buns, but when I was 6 my parents bought me a bun, he was still alive when I was 18. So he would have have been about 12 when he died :(

Simba, Pneumonia, aged around 3

Tinkerbell, not sure, had a headtilt possibly brain damage, aged 3

Sooty, sudden death, aged 8

Mine have been all 2-4 except for the 2 dental nethies - who were never very active & died before they were 1:cry:

Minstrel died when he was 8 months old from EC. He started having seizures at 6 months and he didn't survive after the 3rd one. Maybe if i'd have known then what I know now about EC it might have been a different story!

Thankfully I haven't been in this situation.
But so sad to see so many die in ill health rather than old age.
They are so delicate

Sorry for all the losses.

My two were approx. 4 - can't say exactly, as I don't know how old they were when they arrived.

Silver- 6 died from cancer
Minstrel- 3 myxi
Spookie- 3 myxi
Poppy- 3 myxi
Smokey- 3 myxi
Magic- 3 mxyi
Stripes- 3 EC followed by neurological damage and paralysis

Chico- 3- Liver & Kidney failure, but he'd been very ill for a while
