  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ear wax + ear smells like yeast

My Dominic has lumps of pale yellow ear wax in one ear, and it smells like fermented yeast. He isn't scratching or shaking his head any more than usual though.

He is currently on baytril and tiacil eye drops for minor snuffles, and I'm 99% sure that he must be carrying pasteurella. He's a generally sickly child who gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Any ideas what might be wrong, and what treatment is recommended? I'm at the vets tonight with a different rabbit, so do you think it's wise to take him along as well?

Yeah, i would deffo take him to the vets, he could have an ear infection and if you catch it just now it might be able to get cleared up easily.
Best to get it checked out anyways, might just even be nothing as my kermit used to shake wax out of his ear quite often.

It sounds like its pus not wax.
I'd def take him to the Vet. Maybe something like Canaural will be prescribed.
It contains both a broad spectrum antibiotic aswell as an anti-fungal. It also contains a corticosteroid so it should only be used if there are no signs to indicate that the eardrum has perforated.
