  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sticky eye

I have a 3 week old bun with a sticky eye. I have been wiping it with water and cotton pads but overnight it keeps sticking again. I only noticed it yesterday and today vet is shut. I have just wiped some white gunk from it. Anyone know what else I can do meantime?

Any treatments? Poor bunny's eye is full of white puss. I have to prise it open a few times a day and remove the puss. I have been using cooled salted water.

Do you not have an emergency vet you can phone for advice?

I never thought of that, phoned but they said keep bathing it and take it in first thing. It looks like conjuctovitus. Otherwise he is eating and moving about. After it's cleaned it doesn't take long to stick together again.

I hope your bunny's eye is ok.
There are lots of possible causes: infection, a scratch, something in the eye, blocked tear duct, a dental problem etc.

He definitely needs to see a vet as it could become ulcerated if not treated soon. Ulcers can be difficult to heal and are very painful.
I hope he feels better soon xx
