Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

rabbit specialist near London??

Ocelot

Young Bun
Does anyone know a rabbit specialist near London? My vets seem good and seem to have a lot of experience with rabbits, but they do not seem to be able to help my 9 month old rabbit. At present he is losing weight fast even though he is eating. He started sneezing in March, then had a respiratory infection, then an abcess on his neck. We seemed to clear the infection but it keeps coming back; sometimes it is bronchitis, or on his lungs. He is still sneezing and trying to clear his throat. We managed to clear the abcess and that is healing well. We have tried the dental, baytril, another type of antibiotic. What worries me most is his losing weight even though he is eating. he has ben a bit incontinent too. The vet told me today it may be a very mild case of Myximitosis. Frodo did go in the garden once before he was inoculated. And the sneezing did start after that, but the throat iritation and respiratory infection happened at the same time as the abcess, which was after his inoculation a few weeks later.
He has just had a steroid injection and I will be giving him baytril every day to prevent a secondary infection. On monday we will take bloods etc and get him tested for Myxi. Anyone have any ideas? he is such a sweet one and still young. Please let me know if you have any ideas. I think I should ask for him to have an x-ray in case it is root elongation. My vet said they would have done one when he had the dental but i dont' think they did and they won't show me it. The other thing is to take a swab but they say they would have to anaesthetsie him and they don't want to with him being so weak. He is looking ok and bright, just thin. can you sugest anything? Or have you come across anything like this before? Could he have such mild symptoms for so long and it be Myxi? Thank you, Jo

Has he had a 28 day course of Panacur incase he has an 'active' EC ?

He already sounds to be immunocompromised so the use of a steroid may not have been the best decision as steroids are immunosuppresive.

I can recommend this Veterinary Practice in Twickenham SW London

thanks for advice

Thank you, I am on the Kent side of London, so I may try the one in Kent, after talking with my vets again. it is so worrying. My last rabbit had really similar symptoms - was incontinent and lost weight and snuffly. I had her tested for everything - including EC and it all came back negative. I had her tested a year later again and still we couldn't work out whatg it was. Her weight loss was steady over two years, then she died of a heart attack at 6 years old. Frodo is doing such the same things; He wants to eat, but now can't seem to smell what he is eating very clearly and is being very picky about what he eats. But not like they are when it is a tooth issue - today, he is eating some dry treats, but not soft greens. If we can't work out what it is there doesn't seem to be much we can do. But, I don't want to do things that make it worse - for instance giving steroids if that is the last thing he needs. It certainly hasn't helped him eat better this time. Is that why the vet told me to give him baytril again - because he has had the steroid? it seems so cruel to have him go through this when he is so young. They all love him at the vets because he has such a lovely temerament. the vet gave him a vitamin injection today as well. He is wasting away. Thank you, Jo

Has coccidiosis been considered, particularly HEPATIC Coccidiosis

I am in Cambridge and have two excellent rabbit vets.

Its not that far - just 45 mins from the Dartford tunnel up the M11.

Their names are Mrs Marian Ford and Mrs Jilly Pearson and they are at Cambridge Veterinary group on 01223 249331. It is on the south-west side of Cambridge so you do not have to go into the centre.

They really are both excellent. I usually see Jilly but Marion is just as good and also a brilliant surgeon though this not needed in your case).

PM me if you want anymore information - I really think they will be able to help.

Can I treat both at the same time?

Is it OK to treat with Panecur and try treating for Hepatic coccidiosis at the same time? I don't want to wait till we get results from the EC and Myxi tests before we start trying something. He is starting to walk a bit wobbly. Thank you for all your help. I will follow it all up with my vet and talk to other vets on Monday. It is heart breaking. Today he is kind of sniffing the food and coughs when he eats it. And he has to relax a lot before he can eat a little bit. in fact he is only eating food if I hold it up to him. But he really wants to eat.
Thank you, Jo

Sometimes a vet who is at their wits end will ring another vet who has more rabbit experience - or just for a second opinion. All good vets will know their limits an be very happy to take advice.

Good luck with the little bun!

PS I happen to know Jilly Pearson is in tomorrow morning (as I have an appt with her! - but don't tell Teasal!!! its his regular bladder squeeze!!)

Thank you for all your help and suggestions. My vet told me I was getting annoying when i went in yesterday and suggested things to look into. I think he realised I was just concerned for my bunny though and then spent half an hour discussing Frodo with Jilly Pearson - thank you!! So Frodo has been tested for everything (although I'm still not sure he has had a C&S test - I know they took a sample from his lung, but maybe not his nose, too). They have started him on Septrin instead of Baytril today. I was so scared he would not last the weekend as he was so skinny and was losing his balance and his mind. But the fact that he is still trying to eat, and is still going is giving me hope. Thank you for all your good links to savvy vets and for all your experience and support. I pick him up tomorrow and can't wait to see him! I'll let you know how he does. he did have a myxi jab in the middle of all these sneezing issues and a dental, and an operation to clear the abcess, so he really has had too much happening without us really treating the infection well enough first, i think.
