cooked potato.

halfpenny

Wise Old Thumper
I've bought Jess some baby food for her to try, eating isn't that easy for her at the momnet with her abscess. Problem is most of the veggie ones contain cooked potato- is she safe to eat this.

Potato's toxic for bunnies I think. I usually go for the fruit puree ones or get ones that don't have onion or potato in

The main problem with cooked potatoe is that it's almost pure starch, which really puts a rabbits essential bowel bacteria out of balance - dysbiosis.
Have you thought of cooking the veg yourself perhaps steam & use the coffee grinder or that hand held electric puree "thingy" (sorry for the geriatric moment) to pulp it up?

Thanks.
I know I should blend it myself, but its been such a hectic week and I've had so many animals to medicate, I thought it would be easier to buy.
Mike came home tonight after being away since Saturday morning and the check-out girl must have wonder what kind of people we were- 4 types of baby food, a cheesecake and a bottle of wine, obviously terrible parents.

That's funny, I heard that you can't give buns fooked veg at all. :?

Have you tried recovery diet? It's full of calories too - much more than baby food.

She won't take the recovery food, I was sure I'd read on here people gave organic baby food to rabbits not eating very well. She is taking some mix but not much else, her mouth must be pretty sore and she has no front teeth either.:(

Something with potato in is better than nothing at all.

You can get pureed fruit for babies in yoghurt pot style containers. I can't remember the brand name atm though.

Try grating some carrot and apple up as well...that sometimes tempts them.

hipp red fruit and compote is ok for bunnys mine love it! :) also there is a pure parsnip one too and a pure apple one..try these.. also try porrige oats soaked in water then mashed or steaming veg and blending yourself. critical care or science recovery is supposed to be good but my lot wouldnt touch it!! what else...oh yes there is a pureed carrot one it comes in a squidgey upright bag type thing in tescos...try that baby food one too! hope this helps xx

You can get some in foil pouches from supermarkets - I think they're made by Ella's kitchen - and they have a veg one which doesn't have potato in & some pure fruit ones. Alfie loved the apple and banana one when Bubbles was ill.

:thumb: Yep the Ella's Kitchen organic foil pouches is what we use. Our vet also recommends the Cow and Gate banana flakes added to syringe food but have never tried it. I use the Ella's kitchen fruit ones stirred into critical care/recovery food.

Thanks everybody.
I've tried nearly everthing, and it looks like she has eaten some grated carrot, she hasn't looked at the apple/carrot/parsnip baby food yet.
Will make some more porridge today for her.
She has been getting rimadyl injections every 2 days, and is due one today, but I'm going to ask if I can put her on daily, oral metacam- only problem is she isn't eating much.:? She was quite bright yesterday, but looks down today- so I hope it is not something more sinister, other than she needs pain control.
The abscess is definately softer and I am getting a lot of pus out each time, but it has a long way to go before she goes back out to her friends.

Thanks, will give it a try. I suspect, if she does come through this:(, she will need a specialised diet for the rest of her life because her teeth are so bad.
