Ack! I'm allergic to bunny's....

The doctor says my RAST test results have come back and it turns out among the myriad of other things I am allergic to rabbit dander and such.

The doctor said simplist thing to do would be to get rid of the bunnies but that is not an option. I am not giving or rehoming any of my bunnies who I have had for years. Being house bunnies, I could put them outside but last time I did that the local foxes almost had a free dinner and Smudge was shaking for a week afterwards.
Plus we don't really have the room outside for a big enough hutch for 3 active bunnies.

Any ideas????

Is it a bad allergy, are you getting many symptoms? Anti-alergy stuff like hayfever tablets might work.

i think i probably am too so ill never take the test

i think its the hay that sets my skin off, alfalfa kings timothy hay was the worst my skin would burn within minutes of touching the evil stuff.

did the doc not prescribe some allergy tablets?

I have to say from being a child I have been allergic to anything and everything. Howeve, being on anihistamines for other stuff I thought sod it when Charlie needed a home. I continued on with the anitihistamines for a while, but as I am me and I tend to forget about stuff, I forgot my anti histamines, and that I had allergies.

Granted on a summers day the hay does get to me, but not as much as it used to.

Would recommend getting anti histamines, and if you pay for your prescriptions then have a look at this article

and consider getting them in bulk, online.

Yes I also don't see why you can't take antihistamines long term. They are not thought to cause any problems taken ongoing as far as i'm aware. I would also recommend you get a good hoover like a dyson - animal and vaccuum daily or every other day if you can and also try wearing gloves/dust mask if doing the hay - hay allergies are common too - i'm a bit allergic to the Timothy and the Burns organic mountain one as well, my partner too. Apparently Timothy seeds are one of the biggest grass allergens! and we have a big box of organically grown stuff!
I hope you can keep your buns :D

a freind of mine is allergic to her cats but takes an anti histimean (soz typo) my mum wears a mask and gloves when she cleans the 2 shes got as shes allergic to the hay ,

is it actually the buns or the hay your allergic to sorry just clarifiying must be so frustrating :(

My OH is really quite allergic to our buns. He went to the doctors the other day and I was worried that the doctor would say the rabbits had to go. However the doctor didn't seem to fussed (typical British doctor mentaility!)

We are both allergic to cats and I did test my OH out with a friends rabbit before we got our first rabbit and he was fine. He was also fine with out first rabbit Smudge and it was only when we got the second one Suzi that the problems started. She looks identical to Smudge but I reckon her fur is finer.

Anyway I saw an allergy specialist doctor for my various non rabbit allergies a few years ago. He said I should take those off the shelf one a day antihistimines with citirizine as the active ingredient whenever I felt bad. I give them to my OH and they seem to work ok when he agrees to take them.

Yeh, being allergic to "life" it seems.. I have lots of big anti-histamines to take. Also, because of the other stuff i have to get I have a pre-paid card so money and cost of drugs isnt so much an issue.

Nothing is going to make me rehome my bunnies so I am willing to put up with the antihistamines.

Just the doctor was adamant that I should get rid of them as if getting rid of the family pets was a simple disposable matter.

If you're allergic to a whole load of things you may well find that if you cut those out of your environment your allergy to rabbits will be less problematic. If you're allergic to dustmites, for eg, get a proper anti-allergy mattress cover (special companies online do them; I don't mean ones you can buy in shops). If your system is being bombarded with fewer allergens and even fewer potential allergens things should improve.

When my dust-mite allergy was at its worst I was getting hay-fever even though the tests showed I'm not allergic to pollen. But because everything was on Red-Alert from the dust-mites, my body was hyper-sensitive.

The mattress covers are great, by the way. I was on massive doses of anti-histamines every day and since I've had the mattress cover have been almost drug-free. You can get VAT off it as it's for medical purposes too. I think the one I got was al-protec...

 I'm allergic to one of my cats and to help make things easier I don't allow her in my bedroom or on the sofas and my daughter hoovers the rugs that Sammy lies on. I don't pick her up (my daughter gives her extra hugs from me though) and I've found that I get worse if her hair touches my face so I pet her while she's on the floor. I have disposible gloves which i put on when i pet her and that seems to help a lot. My daughter also grooms her twice a day :D
