New research on Baytril

Hugo's There

Wise Old Thumper
My vet has just told me that new research into the effectiveness of baytril has shown that one large dose once a day is much more effective the giving 2 smaller doses.

Elwood has now been put on 2ml once a day, its going to be great fun getting that into him in one go :lol:

Angel has been having her baytril in one dose....1.8ml ....my vet told me it could either be split or in one dose and angel hates having medicine so once a day was far easier!

i was told to give it twice a day, but ive only been giving it once

one step ahead of the vets aint i :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Is that specifically for Baytril or does it apply to all antibiotics? And does the new research definitely overrule previous research, and why? When I was reading up about pasteurella one of the books I used said that it was necessary to administer abx twice daily rather than once in order to maintain a constant high level of abx rather than one that fluctuates. I can't remember the exact quote but that was the gist of it. ;)

That's interesting Liz - one of the vets at my practice said she was talking to an exotics specialist (didn't specify which one!) who also said that baytril is more effective administered once a day by injection, and stressed that the injection seemed to be much more effective than orally.

It's not a new finding! Since Baytril was licensed for use we've known that it's efficacy was dependent on maximum concentration in the animal rather than persistance of the drug at low levels. So, it has always been clear that a high dose is more effective. I still give it twice daily at the highest end of the dose range to give this peak dose more frequently as rabbits clear most drugs faster than larger animals and so the peak is only a short duration.
Injectable should give little advantage over oral medication providing the intestines are functioning normally. Unfortunately stasis (even if no signs are seen a mild version can be present) is common in most unwell rabbits it is often sensible to start off on injectable until guts are 100%. I don't like to continue injectable baytril as it does cause a lot of tissue damage and soreness when injected.

Are you able to give an idea of the doseage rate you would give please?

My vets used to advise one high dose once a day, then on the advice of, now don't quote me, but I think it was John Chitty, the dose went to 0.3ml per kg twice a day. This was changed in 2008. So, this thread is really interesting, and worrying me!

Daisy has been on Baytril 3mls a day since September. It has held her incurable condition. I put it on her pellets and she eats it. I then wipe the bowl with a dandelion.

Hi Raine,

Is that once a day? And do you then eat the dandelion:lol:
