Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny pulling its fur out

Dominox

New Kit
Greetings,

I own a female Dutch rabbit. She's 1 year old.

3 weeks ago, sore hocks appeared, but I read it was common in rabbits and gave her some Neosporin to prevent any infection. That wound actually healed. But since I was still concerned, I went to the Vet and they basically said it was common & just make sure she has a nice bedding, they gave me meds (a cream to help healing/prevent infection, and an oral med). They also checked her excrement and found no trace of parasite or anything of the sort.

Since then tho, I've noticed she was pulling her fur out at different places. She now has wounds underneath all 4 feet. I decided to phone the Vet again, they told me she's probably doing that kind of behavior because it already hurts, I didn't quite understand the logic behind that.

I'm convinced she has that kind of behavior because she has a phantom pregnancy, she isn't neutered (yet).

I kinda wanted to see what you guys thought about what might cause that behavior, because I don't think the Vet was right, and it'd be hard for me to see another Vet because they are the only rabbit specialist in the area.

If you think she might have a phantom pregnancy, do you think it'd be a good idea to have that done right now? I don't want to put her in any more pain than she already is, I'd much rather have her heal her wounds and then have the surgery done, but whatever works.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the english - it's not my first language!

Hello

Whilst fur pulling is normal for a pregnant/pseudo-pregnant Doe what you are describing sounds more like a pain response. A pregnant/pseudo-pregnant Doe will usually pull fur from her chest and abdomen, not her feet.

This thread may be of interest to you

and this thread was about the onset of the problem

I would not want to get her spayed until the cause of her apparent dermatological problem has been established.

Good Luck.........................and your English is great !! :D

Thanks a lot for the quick response.

Looks like the thread you linked me fits perfectly the situation, she has exactly the same symptoms. The Vet pretty much said it was a pain response too, so I'm guessing they'll give her what she needs to heal.

Thanks again :)
