Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Blind Bunnies

Hi.

Can anyone tell me what signs would give away a blind bun.

Bailey is a real people bunny. He loves his cuddles, but sometimes his behaviour seems out of character and he has phases of appearing startled for no apparent reason.

I've recently bonded him and it at first as soon as the others went near him he freaked big style - they were only trying to groom him not attack him but he found it very stressful.

All my buns are food orientated - they see it and they'll hound you until they've got it, but Bailey you can wave in front of him but its like he doesn't realise its there until its close enough to smell.

My vet checked his eye reflexs which are fine and said she wouldn't really know without an MRI. I don't see this any point in stressing him with this procedure as he's otherwise a very happy bun.

I'm not to worried either way but it would be nice to know if he is and if so if there is anything I can do to stop him having these stressful moments.

Some people report that buns with poor eyesight waive their head from side to side in a scanning motion. Does he sometimes run into things or knock things over? I guess they would be signs. If he is poor sighted then the best thing you can do is to announce yourself before you go near him and to keep his environment clutter free and keep it the same as much as possible.

Indy had bad eyesight and he'll sway from side to side. Not really obviously, just slightly.
I have to be really careful sticking my hand in his cage because if I surprise him he'll lunge & bite :(
I find it helps if I talk to him for a few mins before - letting him know that i'm there.
