Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Snuffles advice

Hi

We give Kirk his meds for snuffles twice a day but we're going on holiday at the end of September and Brian's mum is coming here to after buns again. It's too difficult for her to syringe feed Kirk his meds. Can I take Kirk to the vet for a penicillin injection that will last? I just don't know what else to do. He won't eat anything with the meds on - he just refuses. I've tried and tried with him but he is extremely stubborn. He is also really difficult to handle so she won't be able to hold him and syringe the medication to him.

thanks

You will need to ask your vet if it is appropriate to give a long lasting antibiotic to cover for your holiday period.

If its not a possiblilty you will have to find someone else to look after him who can manage to give the meds.

It is a difficult problem isn't it, we had trouble with our old bunny who needed special care but we were lucky enough to find a lovely lady not too far away who takes rescues and does holiday boarding (she was recommended by our vet) and she took fabulous care of him while we were away.

Even long lasting penicillins need to be administered every 3 days or so.

Although if you started him on a course of penicillin now, he may be well enough by September for you to risk leaving it as long as once per week.

It's always a risk though, so see what your vet thinks.
