sleeping after surgery?

Is it normal for a bun to sleep alot 48 hours after surgery? Peanut is really sleepy, he's lying down and when i pick him up he just goes and lays down again, and hes eyes are constantly closed.he looks exhausted, but he wasnt like this last night?

Hes making really loud breathing sounds and is grinding his teeth, but he can thave more painkiller until 7am :?

when i stroke him he shakes, and hes breathing really quickly. but he seems okay, i just wondered if this was normal for a bun after a big op?

Anaesthetic really wipes people out so I imagine it's the same for animals! When I had my op I was fine on the day but it took a day or two for the exhaustion to kick in, then I could barely keep my eyes open at times

it makes sense. he just looks so sad, his eyes look like they have no life in them, and ive never seen that before in a bunny.

Just something i have become aware of and Jane and liz have also said about is that you can pass on your stress vibes to bun. I think i made the mistake of being round Amber too much as i was worried after her dental. I don't think it did her any good tbh. Peanut has obviously had a much more serious op and while my opinion would be like the other posts - the op taking it out of poor Peanut., please call the vet if you are worried - it's just a call:)

Come on Peanut, stay strong for mummy x

they can be dopey, especially when it's been a huge operation, however, he does sound like he is struggling. I wonder if there are different pain meds he can have in addition to what he is already having. Something stronger? maybe a narcotic?

Just received the picture you sent me
He does look tired. I think Toffee was tired after his neuter but that was 5 odd years ago.

i phoned the vet and she said its hard to tell without seeing him, but doesnt recommend i bring him in as its 50 mins there, 50 mins back etc and that would be more stressful for him.

his ears are hot, but i dont know how else to tell his temp  he is eating and drinking, but only if i bring it to him, he wont move for it. ive now clipped a bottle right next to him, and put food infront of him so he doesnt have to move for it.

i can hear tooth grinding i think, its like little sharp noises.

Is there a vet closer that this vet could maybe prescribe some medication to for PB and you could just pick it up?

they said he has metacam so it should be enough :( If they thought he needed more they could call my vet (the vet he sees for his leg is a specialist, referred by my reg vets) and i could get it from them, theyve said that already but they think he just needs a little time.

if hes still like this tomorrow to call them.

It really does sound like he needs something stronger but that might just be me.

I just hope he perks up for you soon :)

i think he does, but then, i doubt they can give him something that stops it hurting completly if that makes sense.

hes got up and has munched some hay now :)

That's good :)

I agree that it probably won't stop it hurting completely but Metacam is a mild pain killer and there are other stronger ones. If you feel he needs something else then fight for him to have it. I know it can be easier said than done, but remember you know him better than anyone else and if you think he is struggling with the pain then fight to get him what he needs.

i will, hes perked up alittle bit now, hes grooming Jelly! but im keeping a close eye on him and if he looks like he did earlier ill call up again. they cant see him, and i can so ill keep ringing

it's difficult when you don't know if you leave it a little bit longer, it'll be ok, but then you don't want to risk leaving it aswell.

matt has just had an op, ga and skull xrays, nasal swabs etc and he is on metacam and the vet said i should increase the metacam if i feel he needs it, if he makes grinding noises with his teeth and seems lethargic and uncomfortable.

i'm allowed to increase the dose to 1.5ml up to three times a day. i had to get the vet to repeat it at first just to be sure, as they usually have 0.8ml twice a day so he said, 1 and a half ml up to three times a day.

so if your buns op was a big op, i'd say he probably needs more metacam, but you know him and trust what you feel and the signs you recognise as him maybe needing more pain relief etc. you know him best.

i'm giving matt 0.6ml twice a day at the minute as this has taken the edge of things and he is doing ok, but it's reassuring to know i can up the dose should he need it, and not be sat thinking what to do because he isn't allowed the next dose for x amount of hours etc.

:)

What weight is he?

Peanut is on 0.37mls ONCE day? I said to them on the phone "should it not be more than once, or a higher dose as hes had a big op?" and they said "no its stillt he same"?

Exactly :)

Great to hear that he is a bit perkier :) Bet he is so glad to be back with his lady.

right, i feel very silly now.

i have just realised the 'wheezy' sounds, are coming from JELLY. But i dont know if its anything to worry about because she seems 100% fine. she has a clear nose, clear eyes. but shes making sounds that are very weird. i cant explain it.
