Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Dry skin to ears

DDD

Mama Doe
Desmond has dry flaky skin on the outside if his ears. Does anyone know what this may be, and how to treat. It looks like scaley flaky skin, not red, he doesn't mind me touching it, and he doesn't scratch it, I noticed when grooming him just now. Prob won't be able to get a pic as he won't sit still for anything!
Douglas does not have any of this.

My sister in laws rabbit suffered from similar symptoms and they were caused by fur mites. You might want to get it checked out at the Vets, just incase.

Out of my 16 I have one bun who gets dry flakey ears when he moults (but only since becoming a house bunny). I would suggest getting it checked by a vet but bearing in mind that it might be something that is normal for your bun.

Yeah one of my buns always has bit of flaky skin on the back of his ears - it's quite normal for him. But worth getting a vet to check it's not mites first, although I would expect this to be unlikely as they are normally located at the back of the neck and down the back. Ear mites are inside the ear itself.
