Advice re. hocks please.

thumps_

Wise Old Thumper
Thumper has been free ranging indoors for 3 1/2 years, has very furry feet, but I check his hocks when I clip his nails. He used to lie "flopped out" on his side, most of the time, but since his fright doesn't do so. This evening I found both hocks have lost fur, but it's hidden by surrounding fur overlying the area. The skin on 1 is a little inflamed but not infected.

What do you advise?

Best to get it checked by the vet. Wesley had his checked by the vet a while ago and they have since healed. Is your bunny on carpet?

As hurricanhoney said, go to the vet and get them checked :) I am suffering with 3 buns with sore hocks and are all bedded on thick straw/hay and i cover any carpet with thick blankets :)

Sounds like normal heel tip callous to me. Both mine have this, Nino more than Poppy though, hers are pretty non-existant these days if you could even find them through her thick foot fur! Nino's are just a bare spot on the tip of the heel hidden under his thick fur - one gets a little more red than the other but neither clinically significant at this stage. Our vet said this sort of heel tip callous is normal and that most buns have them and most owners don't notice! But I would have Thumper's checked to be on the safe side. :D
We find Nino's improves during summer when they are on the grass more than the carpet, and I just make sure there is something deep padded in the parts of the house they like to rest, and in their hutch e.g vet bed and blankets folded up thick for cushioning. It's only when sat back on the hock at rest that it is usually in contact with the ground causing friction/pressure. For house buns this is often the easiest thing to do. I would also keep Thumper's nails nice and short to keep his foot angle optimum. :D

Thank you all so much for your advice. Yes he's on carpet with good underlay. I've kept an eye on his hocks because of awareness of "carpet burn". I'll have him checked over,(nail length etc) & put down more blankets. I'm a terrible worrier when it comes to Thumper. It's a policy of foreseeing problems before they become serious illness.

We've made a lot of progress this year - good control over hypo motility, & fluid intake improved. It is all thanks to members of this forum, for giving your time & expertise to help us. Thank you all so much.

Wish you could see us running up & down the garden together doing binkies, or hear him "tooth purring" as soon as he's stroked.

I think we're all worriers when it comes to our bunnies

Yes wish we could all see you doing binkies in tandem in the garden!! Thumper sounds like a very happy chappie :D

A big thank you & boost for you all. I saw our lovely rabbit specialist vet yesterday. She advised exactly as you have all done. Keep an eye on it - loads of soft blankets.

Hope I don't get reprimanded. In common with some other buns, he's had an extended "spring" & been humping a lot, & skidding on the carpet at times. Poor boy's had his toy confiscated until his fur regrows. :( :( :(

Are there any fur growing vibes?
