Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Myxi Jab following abscess & tooth root infection?

Mad Bunster

Hi all,

I know that for any vaccine to be effective it can only be administered to a "healthy" rabbit so that an adequate immune response can be achieved.... but would you class a rabbit who has had 3 abscesses removed - due to tooth root infection, which then required incisor removal - to now be "healthy"....assuming that no more infection is present?

Its just Maddie is due her 6 month boost next week :?

Vet says he'll check her over before giving the jab of course...but am i paranoid to not want to mess with her immune system just yet? Shes off her antibiotics now and had the last surgery 12 days ago - so 19 days post op when jab is due.

Would you wait to check infection is gone? Or is risk of myxi higher (shes house bun but I know that affords no protection).

Sorry for waffle!!

Personally I opted not to renew any of Mack's vaccines during the period he was battling his abcesses but, that said, he never reached the point where we felt it safe to withdraw all medication.

I think it is definately the vets call.

If he is off medication then hopefully he is no longer having to fight an active infection, but it is still early days since surgery :?
