Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My boy Archie has problems with molar spurs and an abscess, he's at the vets just now after having his teeth done (he just had them done 2 weeks ago) and they're keeping him in overnight as he not coming round well from the anesthetic

He usually comes from from the GA really well so now I'm seriously worried. Recently he's been acting strange, being happy one day then hardly moving and not eating the next. He is on pain relief and depocillin.

Due to the location of the abscess I'm told it can't be flushed, they won't go back in to remove it again and the only option regarding his teeth is removal of the molars. I can't put him through a GA every few weeks or so, the time between his dentals used to be around 2 months  I'm so scared that I'm going to loose him now and the vet told me to start thinking about my options, which means pts.

Sorry for going on and only posting when I need help but could anyone tell me how successful molar removal is? Thanks

Poor wee Archie

Personally I would only consider molar extraction if there was no sign of osteomyelitis in the jaw bone. Molar extraction is a major operation and needs to be carried out by a specialist (IMO).

I assume Archie has had skull radiographs to determine the extent of his Dental Disease ?
Has he had a recent full blood profile run to see how his liver and kidney function is coping with all the GAs and the chronic infection ?

Really only you and your Vet can decide how much more treatment Archie can cope with. I am sorry Archie is not doing too well

Whether it is possible to remove a molar really depends on the individual tooth, If they are loose then removal is usually option, if they aren't loose then it is usually not a good idea as taking it out could shatter the jaw bone especially if there is surrounding infection in the bone.

Sending loads of vibes for Archie, maybe he is just taking a little longer to come round this time as it is so hot.

He had an skull radiographs taken 2 weeks ago and theres no sign of bone infection. He hasn't had bloods done so I'll ask for the vet to do this all being well. We'll just have to wait and see

Archies home :D He's eating his hay, pooing fine and we had a little cuddle so he's obviously feeling better  I'm so glad to have him back and he seems really happy at the moment, he's such a little trooper
We'll just have to wait and see what the next few weeks bring and hope that the gap between his dentals increases.

I hope Archie is continuing to do well this morning

 He's still doing fine today, thanks for asking :) He's managed nearly all his pellets since this morning and he's eating his hay with no problem :D

I've got him some hay thats a little harder than the one they've been getting so we'll see if he's able to eat that and if it makes any difference.

Here he is just now in his hay tray munching away :)
