  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sloppy poos

Smudge is otherwise happy and healthy but has today started having very sloppy poos. He is eating fine and drinking - could the heat have something to do with it? He is in a run all day as it's sooo hot but he can't free frange any more like he used to cos last week we saw a cat chasing him round the garden. :( He sleeps in a wooden Playhouse with the window removed and mesh attached to window.

Has he had any dietry change? Like too much veggies? Or iceburg lettuce? Change in pellets? This normally causes sloppy poos, I'd keep him on hay alone for a day and see if they clear up

No, but he has had time free ranging and we have LOADS of weeds - could have eaten something he shouldn't. I'll keep him in the run for a few days. :( He likes his freedom - must get a gardener in!

It's possible but I would think unlikely. You'd have to eat a lot of an unsafe plant to have ill effects and these tend to be sypmtoms of toxicitiy which may not necessarily be an upset tum. It depends what you mean by sloppy poo? Is he doing normal droppings and just having a few uneaten caecotrophs (bunches of grapes - dark colour) as well? or are all his droppings sloppy? If it is the latter then he could have a bacterial infection or severe caecal dysbiosis. If he passes normal droppings now and no more sloppy poos then just keep an eye on him. If he keeps doing them today and they are they 'only' poos he is doing then he needs to see a vet today. Dehydration is a worry esp in this hot weather! It all depends on how bad it is. If just a few extra caecotrophs then it could just be something is particular he has eaten a lot of, too many pellets, or grass that has suddenly sprung up with a high sugar content following a dose of rain and then sun! Hope he feels better soon :) Plenty of hay and water in the interim.
