Today i went to a rescue to see a bonded pair of bunnies i am hoping to adopt. One rabbit had to have his front teeth removed and i would appreciate any advice on best things and ways to feed him.At the moment they both eat excel junior/dwarf.

Hi there,

My rainbow bridge bunny "Yoshi" had his front teeth removed. He was able to eat much better once he had, he had no problem eating excell junior pellets.

Eating veg was no problem for him either he had greens, watercress, rocket, spinach, sweetcorn (broke up into little pieces) and carrots (grated)

Definately no problems with treats and raisins - he couldn't get enough of them.

Hope that helps some and I hope you adopt them, bunnies make lovely pets, I so miss Yoshi but I never regret getting him...

Thank you for your advice.I am very excited about adopting the 2 bunnies.they will my first house bunnies and i just want to make sure i do my best for them just like i do for my other rabbits.

my bunny miffy had his front teeth removed afew months ago, he eats exactly the same as his brother, snuffy, all I do it chop everything up very finely, greens, carrots, baby sweetcorn (not much of the last two though!) even fresh picked grass and dandelions. he eats it with no problems.

i thought hay would be a real problem as i didnt think he would be able to pick up the long pieces, but I feed his super forage (by excel) which is short pieces of dried grass and he can pick this up no problems (i sometimes pick through his poo and i can see whole pieces of this in his poo so I know he is eating it!) He can also fairly easily eat hay cakes from pets at home, which are pure compacted hay, i just crumble them a bit.

as a treat i crumble shredded wheat, which is pure wheat no salt or sugar.

Sugarplum has no front teeth and manages anything that is a bite sized piece! I give her long hay but wasn't sure how much she was actually able to eat so she has ready grass too which disappears much faster!

Thank you for your replies.I get my adopted bunnies on saturday as had to wait on their food getting delivered. They are both on excel junior and dwarf.
I feel alot better about looking after them thanks to all the replies,i now cant wait till saturday :D

My mums boy has no front teeth and he gets on just fine. He has to have his veg cut up small or grated but thats about it other than that he is a normal rabbit

Ok,i have my lovely buns but they are on excel junior and dwarf and im not to keen on keeping them on that.My other bunnies are switching from average pet shop food to oxbow pellets.i am not sure what to try ,i think rodger would manage oxbow as its thin and i could easily makethe bit smaller for him.what do you feed your buns with no front teeth?

Shelley

Mine will eat whatever he can shove into his mouth:shock::lol::lol: I have to be careful because he steals food too, he loves crackers and fenugeek crunchies. I just break them into small pieces for him. Back to your question, I think the oxbow pellets would be fine. They are very similar to the Allen & Page which my gummy boy can eat with no problem. I don't make them smaller for him either. He hasn't had any problems eating Excel or Wagg. I have been to scared to try the Science Selective because the pellets are so big. My other buns love it though.

Congrats on your new bunnies:love: Now that you have them can we have piccies? Please???:)

i do have some more pics taken yesterday, will stick them on photo thread later as waiting on phone call to take bunny i rescued to kareen.poor thing has something wrong with its mouth and it was just left in pet shop with sign free to good home!

Rambi has no front teeth (he was found wondering the streets with his teeth growing into his jaw  )

We were told to cut his food into tiny pieces, we do this with carrots and hard stuff (celery, cabbage stalks etc) but coriander and stuff like that we just leave it as is. He also eats Science Selective, Gingko Plus and hay with no problems at all. He eats more and faster than our bun with perfect teeth  (they both weigh about 1.5kg).

Our vet is a special university research vet who specialises in bunnies, especially dental buns and anaesthetic for buns. He took photos of Rambi's teeth for an article he is writing about how rabbits can live perfectly healthy happy lives without their front teeth.

Honestly, you'll be amazed at what they can shove down their faces - very cute!
