  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bit anxious after spay

Gianetta

Young Bun
I collected Caddy from the vets this lunchtime - she was spayed yesterday morning but they kept her in overnight because she wasn't eating well. She's rather quiet but doesn't look to be in distress but she's not eating so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when I get up tomorrow morning she'll have had a reasonable amount to eat during the night - otherwise I think I'll be on the phone to the vet!

Did they give you some syringe food? You really need to feed her through the night every couple of hours if she's not eating by herself, you can't leave her til the morning, she could be in stasis by then, if she's not already. What medicines did they give you? She will need painkillers (unless they gave her some before they sent her home?) and gut motility drugs (again unless they gave her some before they sent her home?) and also you will need to syringe her some fluids (water or cooled herbal tea like peppermint works well).
She also needs to be kept warm if she feels cool and isn't moving much.

Just got back from taking Caddy back to the vets. Her temperature is normal and she's moving about OK. They've kept her in, given her a pain relief injection and are going to syringe feed her and give her something to get her gut moving. I feel better that she's being looked after overnight and hopefully I will get a phone call in the morning with some good news!

Hi, I think that was a good decision, well done for going back. She will need feeding through the night you see. Does she have a bunny friend? Did you take them along with her? Perhaps when you collect her tomorrow you could ask to take these drugs home with you, a bag of syringe food and some syringes. They could even show you how to do it before you leave....? I hope she picks up soon :)
p.s. i'm really pleased to hear they've been proactive and given her all the right things, that will really help her.

Thanks. They are excellent vets - I've used them for years for a variety of different animals and they do seem to understand rabbits' special needs.

I collected Caddy this lunchtime and they reported that she had eaten and pooed well overnight so they were happy for her to go home. Perhaps she just needed that extra pain medication. She has eaten some greens at home this afternoon and snatched a treat out of my fingers in her usual way.

I've just ordered her a new and better run from Dawsons and in a few weeks time or when she seems to be completely back to normal I'm hoping to find her a friend - if I can find a bunny she fancies.
