Mopsy update - Its not good news:(

Mama Doe
Went to pick Mopsy up from the vets this afternoon.

The vet managed to get a urine and a blood sample. The urine sample is very dilute indicating a problem with her kidneys. Its likely something she was born with. The vet has sent off the blood to be tested but she thinks its either going to be diabetes insipidus or nephrogenic kidneys.

The vet has said that she is healthy apart from this and that she shouldnt be in any pain. The vet said the best she can hope for is a happy but much shortened life.

She says when/if the blood tests confirm her suspicions she can refer Mopsy to a rabbit specialist who she thinks will probably give us a reduced fee because she is such an interesting case.

She said all I can do is make sure she has plenty of water all the time, which I do anyway, and check her bottom regularly because it will be wetter than most buns putting her at a higher risk of fly strike. I do this already too.

I am so sad for her. She has a big shaved patch on her neck where she had blood taken, couldnt get any from her ear, and every time I see it I'm crying.

Does anyone else have a bun with this?

the latest issue of rabbiting on magazine has an article on dibetes in rabbits, i can scan and email it to you if you would like me too?

Is her urine really dilute just because she is drinking a lot? I think other factors are more indicative of a problem (specific gravity). The blood results will show more details anyway.

My bun Maddie went through blood and urine tests because she was over drinking but everything came back ok. She varies how much she drinks now, but its not as bad as it was (apart from the last two days, I'm assuming from the heat).
