Peanut is plucking his hock...

Yup.. thats right.

Just witnessed him grooming himself like they do and had his right leg stuck out infront of him like they do, and he was cleaning round his hock. I look closer and see he has fur in his mouth and he has literally plucked the hair from his hock.

The fur had grown back and the bald patch was small again now i can EASILY place my THUMB onto his hock. hes plucked along the hock towards his toes, and around the base of his hock like up his ankle almost. Ive felt it, and it doesnt feel or look like the abcess is back, so why on earth would he pull all the fur out!?!?

Im taking him to the vet tomorrow i think.

Must be bothering him I guess.
If he is healing it could be at the itchy stage.

any advice?

Our foster bun did this whilst his hocks were very sore, but also whilst they were healing - itchiness I expect as said above. For this reason our vet continued him on a maintenance dose of metacam - for anti-inflammatory and anti-itch purposes!! It took about 2 weeks for it to heal sufficient enough for him to stop chewing at them. We also used the distraction method - food! Sorry can't help any more than that

Peanuts had an abcess in his hock so i fear its more complicated than that

this is how it looks now. You can see his plucked more at one side, its not directly in the middle. feeling it, theres a lump on the SIDE off the hock. so i am thinking maybe the abcess IS back?! Felt his other hock and theres no such lump.

I can only see the specialist on tuesday. I hope he will be okay to wait that long.

Our foster bun had terrible sore hocks on all four of his feet pads, no fur left, and he couldn't even stand on them. The metacam was used alongside the antibiotic therapy and a change in living environment. If you feel the abcess is back you will probably need more antibiotics and a vet to reasses the bones of the feet just to be on the safe side. I found veterinary bedding very helpful but others find deep bedded hay better. Sore hocks are so difficult to treat, i'm sorry your poor bun is having such trouble. It took about 3 months for our foster bun to start to show real healing and reduction in inflammtion and skin thickening. Any infection will slow this healing process down. Poor bunny

You can get gel from your vets which is designed to be used on op. sites where there are stitches. It provides a moist environment which aids healing and also numbs the wound slightly to prevent chewing or scratching at the wound. Not sure if it would help on hocks, but might be worth a try?

I meant it might help if it's itching him?

Of course it's a risk putting anything on the hock in case you make it flare up again

hes got an appointment tonight at our normal vet as the specialistis away until next friday and doesnt have appts til the monday after.

fingers crossed.
