Snowberry

Wise Old Thumper
Snowdrop had a bit of diahorreoa on Saturday night, I phoned the emegency vet who said put her on hay only and bring her in Monday. Vet on Monday felt her tummy and said she would be fine after a few days on hay only.

She then formed lots of normal poos Monday night but Tuesday she had a bit more. It isnt lots and is just every now and again its like a teaspoon of thick liquidy stuff. I am going to get her back to the vets tonight.

Is there anything that could be causing this? She is forming lots of normal poos between these episodes.

Sorry to be posting again about this but im gettting worried about her. n

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm I have seen something similar before and the Bun had problems with an impacted caecum.
The fact that you have previously mentioned that she has abnormal shaped poo at times makes me think that she has a chronic gut motility problem :?

I hope the Vet can come up with some answers.

Problem is I dont think my vet is very experienced with rabbits.

What is the sort of outcome for a bun with this?

How would the vet be able to diagnose it?

I cant lose another bunny to tummy problems!

Well first I think I'd try to locate a Bunny Savvy Vet. Are you near any Rescue's that could recommend one ?

An impacted caecum can usually be palpated on examination. More info may be obtained from an abdominal Xray. Bloods may show up any chronic inflammatory condition.

I am worried about an xray as this is following the same pattern as Graham- funny poos, has GA for xray and didnt come home again.

I will see if anyone can recommend a bunny savy vet, mine seems ok but I am just not overly confident after losing Gray.

The vet felt her tummy on Monday and said it felt fine.

I just dont want to take a bright and happy bunny in for an xray and lose her like I did Graham.

one of my bunnies did a poo like this last week but seems fine - I think with them moulting at the moment and grooming each other, they are getting a bit slow in their guts - I give mine a papaya tablet every day to try and help with this (holland and barrett do them or you can buy pet ones online)

having said that I had a bunny a couple of years ago was doing liquid poo and mucus etc. but it was because her tummy was EMPTY - I quadrupled her pellets as she wasn't eating enough hay, and she was fine after she'd recovered.

the other thing I do with my rabbits pellets is split them morning and evening, so they get a very small handful each meal and plenty of time to digest them in between - they do their caecal poos around midday and midnight if you are feeding them twice a day :)

Its a mix of A&P, Excel and D&H that she is on at the minute. They usually get a small handfull in a morning and again in an evening but I have cut out the evening one for this week.

She has an appointment with my vets at 5pm tonight so I will see what they say. Would you be thinking about an xray now or trying different pellets and feeding patterns first?

She is definately eating her hay and she is still on fibreplex once a day.

Sorry to hear about your buns poop issues :(

Personally I would get the xray done - as if there is something going on inside.. i,e, impacted cecum or blockage in the gut, you need to get things moving again as soon as possible.

I lost my Toshi bun after 4 months of tummy and poop issues.. he had odd shaped poop to start, but his real probs started after a dental, he went through stasis and onto impaction. He had IV and SubQ fluids, metaclop jabs, anti-inflammatories, metacam, zantac - in the end it was all I could do to get him to drink on his own. The problem had been going on so long - with vets trying all other remedies such as no pellets, less pellets, more veg, no veg etc - that when it came to crunch time I had to have him operated on.. his guts were so badly stretched from the impaction that he would never had normal gut function and would suffer from impaction for the rest of his life. Sometimes the vet cannot feel the impaction... one of the vets I saw said his tummy felt somewhat better - 3 days before he was operated on! It didn't feel better at all - I could feel that and I am no vet! It is best to err on the side of caution and nip this issue in the bud sooner.

Time is important... diagnosing your buns problem is urgent, I understand you are worried about a GA but it could save his life in the long term. If you leave it and try other things first, it may be harder to get him back to having a healthy motility later on. If you lose a bun through trying to help by diagnosing a problem, it is better than losing a suffering bun and feeling you didn't do enough to help them early on. Don't mean to sound blunt at all - I would just hate for anyone to go through what I did with Toshi, not a day goes by when I don't wish things different or imagine what if's. x x Good Luck and stay strong x

Thanks. I just feel so guilty about putting Graham through an anesthetic and him not coming round when he might have been ok without one.

I will have a chat with my vet tonight and see what she thinks.

Just to confirm the excellent advice from Linz1love buns. I'm so very sorry Toshi didn't make it through.

Mine has long standing gut probs with similar symptoms to yours, but that does not mean that the underlying prob. is the same. Finding out exactly what's wrong is urgent & essential. Do the runny poops "stink"? is your bun still eating her Caecs?

Everything crossed for you tonight. I can understand how it is a very difficult decision for you. Is there an "exotics" center anywhere near you you could be referred to quickly? Please keep us updated.

Update

Just got back from seeing the vet. She had a good feel of her tummy which she said felt fine, checked her teeth which are ok and took her temperature which was fine.

She is referring us to a specialist on Monday (possibly one in Bristol if anyone knows who this might be) and if her eating changes/has any more diahorrea she is leaving a message with the weekend vets to do an emergency referral.

She has had 0.2ml of Colvasone incase its an inflammed gut and is on strict poo watch untill Monday. She is still eating and bright in herself.

I am pleased my vet knows when to say "I dont know- but I will find someone who does".

Hopefully the referral will provide some answers.
I agree that it is much more helpful for a Vet to say 'I dont know' and refer on rather than wading blindly in.

if you are sure that the 2 buns symptoms are virtually the same, then it could suggest an exterior cause common to both bunnies' living environment. For e.g., some sort of bacteria or worm that get into the bun.

Unless the 2 buns are from the same source (same mom) then it could still be genetic problem. If they are not from the same source and seeing the same poo problem, I would thoroughly clean their living quarter with breach and then water spray the environment again and move them inside for a few weeks and see if there is any changes.

They are not from the same litter, both were rescue buns from different rescues.

It is more than likely my fault and my living environment is not right.

It's not too late, if I face the above situation, I would suspect bacteria or worm and engage in cleaning, perhaps several times to see if it'll make a difference
