  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

worried about flystrike

Alpha Buck
my buck bandit will not let me pick him up and check his bottom, i`m really worried about flystrike, if i can`t check him, any advice please.

The only way to check if he is at risk is to pick him up. I have a bun that is similar but sometimes it just has to be done. It may take 2 of you to catch him but please try. Have you noticed any excess caecotrophs around? If not the risk is lower but is still potentially there.

You could try laying down on the floor and trying to get a sneaky peek of his bum when he hops off, I do this most days with mine but give them a thorough check once a week. I will catch all of them and check them over however if I see any caecotrophs or abnormal poo.

Honey is a nightmare also to check as she doesn't mind being picked up but she hates being on her back. So I do it my lap she does grunt at me but will put up with it. Picking the bun up and checking is really the only way to check. The only thing I could think of is to get rear guard put on at the vets and use fly repellents i.e. natural ones like cintronella, lemon balm, mint, and lavender. I'm an obsessive bum checker as two of my friends have had bunnies which have had fly strike. :(

My female detests being picked up.

I tend turn her to face away from me, then stroke her to lure her into a false sense of security, then slip one hand under front paws and chest and the other under her bum. I then pull her back onto my front and slide her down into my arm like a baby. It sounds awkward when you write it but it isn't and it keeps her back secure.

I did the rearguarding yesterday, that was fun. Good luck.
