Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Paralysis - NOT EC & nothing broken

Hi there, I appreciate there are already a good few threads on rear leg paralysis but I have a slightly different problem.

I have two 4 year old french lop house rabbits. I came home from work one evening 6 weeks ago to find that Oscar wouldnt move and was holding up his left paw. He would struggle to get to his tray and to his water bottle but somehow managed. He was taken to the vet who gave him a good examination, felt nothing but gave Metacam just to help. Within a week, Oscar was back to full health.

About 2 weeks later the same problem came back, it may just be a coincidence, but it returned after he got a wee fright. After a few days back on the Metacam there was no improvement and we increased the dose of Metacam.

Still no improvement within a week and so we had very extensive x-rays carried out which showed nothing.

Within days it was apparant that he didnt just have a sore paw and that it looked as though he was paralysed, and was wetting himself etc.

We then started him on panacur thinking he must have EC but the vet called last week to say that he had a negative titer.

We are all stumped!

Oscar is eating well and can sometimes muster up the energy to get into his tray or to get from one place to another.
We are continuing with the panacur and the metacam but really dont know what else to do. He looks as though he wants to move, occassionaly he does these big "cat stretches" and looks as though he has stiffened up from being in the one position for so long. Other times he pushes himself up into sitting but the thought of moving looks as though it proves too much and he just gives up and lies back down again.

Anyone have any ideas what else this may be? My family and I have read website after website after website, each one contradicting the last one. Do we move his legs, give him some physio, or do we leave him sit incase we do more damage? Some websites indicate that there may have been a fracture or similar but by the time we got him to the vet it would not have shown, however, any damage to his spine may already have been done.
I have no idea what to do for the best and hate seeing him so immobile.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Had he had panacur before the e.c. blood test at all?
If so, e.c. could still have caused damage to his brain and kidneys without showing up in the blood test.

Is he only paralysed on one back leg, could it be a ruptured cruciate ligament. I have no idea about rabbits, but it is common in dogs.

How long after onset of symptoms was the blood test taken ?
It may be a 'false negative' and the test was taken before he'd started to produce antibodies maybe :?

Has he got feeling in his feet-ie if you pinch them does he react ?

You could try asking your Vet about considering a Potassium deficiency (was a full blood profile done or just EC titres ?). Giving a Potassium supplement could be tried -or feed some Banana orTomato Juice both of which are high in Potassium.
Selenium deficiency can also cause 'floppy Rabbit' symptoms so a Vit E supplement could be given.

What a worry for you

Otherwise, there could be nerve or tendon damage. Even soft tissue back pain (I assume the vet has ruled out arthritis)

Thank you all for coming back so quickly, I really appreciate it.

The blood tests were done AFTER we started him on panacur, about 5 or 6 days after.
To be honest, we thought it best to get him straight onto the treatment to try and get the best results and we got the blood tests taken the following week.
The vet spoke with my dad about the results, I will have a word with him and find out what terminology was used and will post back.

I will need to speak to her with regards to the arthritis, I still think this is a possibility but I will need to check exactly what x-rays etc were carried out.

My mum and dad are looking after the bunnies just now as I have to go to my work and they can give him care round the clock, I will find out about the pinching of the feet etc and post back.

I will post back when I am not in work, thank you all so much for your comments, keep any suggestions coming in.
