Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help with Sugarplum: 27/6 update

Wise Old Thumper
She seems to be using the use of her back legs!

I took her to the vets last week and they checked her hips and legs and couldn't find a problem, said she didn't seem to be in and pain when they were moved and that she had good mobility.

She seems even wobblier today, she tries to charge around the garden and binky and her back half just wobbles over :(

any ideas what could be causing this, could she have had a stkoke? She isn't quite 3 yet though!

nope she didn't give me anything just said to keep an eye on her! She has lost weight too gradually! Shall I give her some panacur?

Personally I would. A minimum of 28 days, some people do 42 days. All in contact Rabbits will also need treatment and you need to bleach clean their environment on days 21 and 28 of treatment. If you do a 42 day course bleach clean at the end of treatment too.
No other Rabbit should share exercise areas with the Rabbit(s) on treatment.
I would ask the Vet for Metacam too. Anti-inflammatories are an essential part in the treatment of EC to minimise the amount of longterm damage caused as a result of the inflammatory response to the EC spores.

I agree with Jane here; I have a bun who is 'off' her back end. There are no signs of arthritis or other damage at the moment (although we haven't xrayed yet), this is simply by the vet doing manipulations, feeling through the movement and the bones etc. His first thoughts are nerve damage and the first port of call has been for it to be EC related. She's been prescribed Panacur. She has no other symptoms at all that are EC defining.

thanks my vet wasn't there yesterday so they said they would leave a message for her to phone when she came in today, just waiting now! Actually Sugarplum seems less wobbly again today, she did scare me yesterday

She's quite wobbly again today :( How long before the medicine should start to kick in, I have to phone the vet to give her an update in a week?

well she seems to be getting worse rather than better so far. She actually feels floppy when you pick her up. She doesn't seem in pain at all though she still tries to hop around the garden for hours! Although she can't get in and out of the shed herself now. She is not managing to get in and out of her litter try either and seems to lie in her wee as she is filthy :( what is best for getting rid of the urine stains and keeping her fresh?

Has anyone tried puppy pads with rabbits, or would they just get eaten? :?

I have treated her with fly spray now too so hopefully that will protect her.

well it's been 10 days on panacur and metacam now I think and she has deteriorated so I am booked in to see the exotic specialist later. I just hope he is good with rabbits, the vet I saw before is only part time and not available until next week!

well when i went to get her she was lying caked in diarrhea  the vet wanted to keep her in overnight and xray her spine tomorrow but they wouldn't let Splodge stay so i have brought them both home via my mums for a bottom wash and asked my dad to drop her off in the morning. I think she is going to have to go by herself though, firstly because the vet wasn't keen on having the pair of them as they said it would be too cramped in their holding facilities as she was such a big rabbit! and also because Splodge is very nervous, Sugarplum is deaf, probably nearly blind and generally very laid back so hopefully she will be ok. They have never been separated before though

so vibes needed for the big girl tomorrow when she has her xray.

I haven't spoken to the vet yet as she is in a meeting but she left a message on my answer phone that they have found a serious bladder infection and they want to admit her for the weekend

Reading through the symptoms I am finding it very strange as I hadn't noticed any problems with her wee :?

Atleast you have a better idea whats wrong now - sending lots of vibes.

Also I have used puppy pads with buns post spay and never had a prob with them eating it, which is unnusual as they destroy everthing else!

well not so much of an infection as they haven't put her on antibiotics. They found her bladder full of calcium and they think that it is the pain of this that has caused her mobility problems. They have expressed her bladder and have her on intravenious fluids to help flush it out? and strong painkillers. They have also sent a wee sample for analysis. They are keeping her in overnight so that she can have the painkillers and be monitored tomorrow and she may be able to come home tomorrow if she is eating ok.

Now I am really concerned how she could have got a bladder full of calcium, I thought I was giving her a good diet!!!

Once again, I am late in seeing this - sorry!:oops:

Sending a huge amount of vibes for Sugarplum. Hopefuly they can treat the infection and get her back to full health again.

Hugs and Vibes for you and buns
