Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Please help poor Rusty!!

New Kit
My rabbit Rusty hasn't been eating or drinking for a few days, we actually think he hasn't been eating for a while and we just thought he was been fussy.
So we took him to the vets and we are syringe feeding him baby food and water. He was given a general anesthetic today to check his teeth and have a few xrays to try and figure out why. His teeth were fine but the vet was stumped by what she saw on the xray, we have been told that there is a small blockage but thats moving of its own accord. She then showed me a x ray of a healthy bunny and then showed me rusty's which was really different. Instead of his intestines been spread out they appear to be in his chest area with all his other organs, where they should be was just what appear to be an empty space. The vet told me she has never seen anything like it! So I have brought him home to be looked after by me tonight and then he is going back tomorrow. But I have been told he could pass away tonight or at anytime really.
What should I do?? Has anyone else heard anything like this??
Please help!!

Where is the blockage and how big? Did the vet say what it might be? Maybe he's swallowed something he shouldn't?

Just in his intestine and she said it was very small and moving its self. The vet has given us baytril and he has had dex and metoclop this is his second lot of injections the first didnt do a thing and I don't think this lot will either. I have been told to syringe him with veg or fruit baby food, never syringed a rabbit with baby food before do you think this is right?

I'm really not an expert but not bad at biology! i'm thinking that if it's small and moving along it will find it's way along the intestine and bun will eventually pass it.

This may not be anything to do with his intestinal arrangement i suppose. I would expect plenty of animals and people have all sorts of things in the wrong place etc but never know and lead normal lives. Hope this is the case withh Rusty.

There are lots of people on here who are experts on syringe feeding and bunny health. I'm sure they'll answer better than i can soon hun. Sorry i can't be more help:(

no you been great thankyou very much!
The vets seem to think the intestine been where it is, is really serious but maybe its just one of them things, oh I dont know the vet was stumped and I am stumped! I just feel a vet shouldn't be stumped by something like this!

Could you clarify what was seen on the Xrays? Are the intestines and abdominal organs actually in the chest cavity rather than the tummy area?
How is his breathing? Has he been passing any poo?

His breathing is fine and he is passing very little poo's but not much of them. I dont think its a hearnia the vet would have picked that up and he would be in pain which he doesn't appear to be.

I cant understand how his breathing would be fine if his intestines were in his chest cavity :?

All sounds very odd :?

I would go to another vet for another opinion as different vets may have come across this before. does your vet specialise in exotic pets?

my old rabbit had teeth problems and we used to give him baby food (the vegetable one) because he could lap it up easily.
at first we had to feed him with a syringe but he soon got a taste for it!

hope your bunny gets better soon. i defo suggest seeing another vet for another view on it.
xx

So, the intestines aren't in the chest cavity, they are in his abdomen, where they should be, but somewhere in the small intestine is a blockage?

Not according to what the OP said here

If his intestines are still within the abdominal cavity and there is no change in the chest cavity, but the intestines are not lying normally then further investigation is needed to figure out what is going on. There could be an abnormal structure in the abdomen that is displacing them, or adhesions that are holding the intestines in a normal place, or even just odd positioning for the radiographs. Without actually seeing the radiographs we can only speculate and any advice given can't be accurate. If your vet is not comfortable proceeding then I would suggest at least a review of the radiographs by a specialist, or referral. If there is a significant problem, the sooner it is addressed the better the outlook will be.

But then she said, "they weren't under his ribs more bunched up together around the kidneys."
:?:?
I reckon you are right, and its an intussusception, followed by an obstruction, and a collapse of everything beyond it. Surely Rusty couldnt have survived a general anaesthetic, with heart and lungs compromised by a chest full of innards?
