Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spaying a bun after bloat?

Autumn is just getting back to 100% after her bout of bloat last Friday.

She is in desperate need of spaying, she is harrassing her husbun and I think the stress of this may be what caused he bloat in the first place.

The question is, is her spay more risky now she has suffered this, i.e afterwards is she likely to suffer it again and also how soon would it be safe to spay her?

I had a bunny neutered about 10 days after a bout of bloat. I was really worried as she was also older but the vets didn't seem concerned and it all went smoothly :)

I'm no expert on spaying but I do know bloat and stasis often have the potential to reoccur after a recent episode as it can take up to two weeks to regain full gut motility depending on how bad the case was. I'd have thought that atleast two to three weeks was a safe time to wait. Have you asked the vet what they think? am sure someone more experienced on here would have a better idea. I only know about bloat/stasis and that I would avoid any other treatments or stresses for atleast two weeks if it was my bun. I understand that the GA itself has a slowing effect on gut motility so I would want to make sure that bun's gut motility was back up to speed first and that the vet doing the spay is aware of the bloat episode your bun had so you can all keep an eye out for any relapses post-spay. Obviously adequate post-op pain relief is essential.

Thanks.

I am going on hol in a couple of weeks so was going to wait till I came back anyway so I can keep an eye on her myself. My vets will give her a thorough check beforehand anyway.
