  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any advice on CVS Club or PetMedic vets?

I haven't used them so can't comment. The checks and vaccinations sound good - you may have to check their terms and conditions. The specialist bunny clinic sounds good too.

Try to edit your title as someone may recognise the name or ask in rabbit chat (not everyone comes on this bit regularly).

Pet Medics were very good when i took my dog there in an emergency as of yet not took the rabbits, but liked it

I do not have a rabbit currently, but I am so concerned about the appalling level of service offered at PetMedics that I had to register to warn you!

I'll start with the bits that are not that bad and end with the part that will truly shock and disgust you!

My gerbil was getting thinner, so I took her to PetMedics in Salford, where they said her teeth were too long (she is old and doesn't gnaw wood anymore), which was the only correct thing they told me! They clipped them, but they should use dental burrs due to the risk of damaging the teeth. They told me to keep her on her normal food, and to keep it as it was, no grinding it or moistening it and not to give her any soft foods - well how the hell did they think she was still alive?!
They also gave antibiotics even though she didn't seem to have any other problem with her mouth than a teeth problem, common in old gerbils. They also gave her a steroid injection to perk her up, disregarding the fact that she is old, so she will not be as active in her old age and didn't have an explanation for why she wasn't as active.

She was also having fits, and they looked at her scent gland and diagnosed a tumour and said "It's probably cancer" and said it may be time to think about putting her down at the next appointment.

Well, as they couldn't answer my questions and got some facts wrong, I went to another vets for a second opinion, especially as I couldn't find a tumour where they said there was one. Thank goodness I did!!!
She doesn't have a tumour, she has a normal scent gland (PetMedics DIDN'T know what a scent gland was, so just IGNORED my questions), she hasn't got cancer and she is no longer having fits, she's eating properly, and her energy is coming back. She is improving really well.

But if I'd continued using PetMedics, I'd have a dead gerbil, either from starvation (the most likely outcome had I followed their advice) or from euthanasia.
