Poor garden centre bunny

BeatrixPotter

Mama Doe
I went to our local garden centre this morning to stock up on hay. When I was there 2 weeks ago there was an 18 month old lionhead doe for sale. The label on her cage said experienced home needed. She was so cute.

Well today she is still there.:( I asked the shop assistant about her. Apparently she was bought back to them because her owners didnt want her anymore. She was pg at the time which explains the baby lionheads they had there last month.:( She needs an experienced home because apparently she is aggressive since she had the babies.

She is £20.

I so so wish I had room for her.:( I wish I could buy her and then find a nice rescue with room for her.:( She deserves a really nice forever home.

I also wish I could find somewhere else local to get decent hay that didnt sell animals.

Since she is a 'problem bunny' to them, have you asked if they would let her go for free? They might agree since they probably find it easier to sell the cute babies they would normally get in. If so maybe you could find a home somewhere for her :?

Poor girl. :(:( She is no doubt aggressive because she will be terribly hormonal, poor love, and she would be helped no end by being spayed.

I did say that to the assistant. She just nodded and agreed. If only I had room. She's lovely and came up to me and my son to say hello.

I would of taken her - I HATE to see pets being sold in garden centres, garden centres are for plants and stuff - not animals that need years of love.

I wish I lived near you - we would find her a home together!!!

It so difficult :(

If someone takes her, it will create more room for another helpless bun but, at the same time, this girl needs someone to take her on who would get her spayed and find her a husbun.

Why oh why are bloomin' garden centres allowed to sell animals?!

:(:(

It's very hard and I tend to avoid places where I know I'm going to see things like that because I would feel obliged to take her home, even though I couldn't really afford to.

I havent been able to stop thinking about this poor girl.

I remember seeing the baby lionheads for sale. They must have been hers. It was about 2 months ago so if they waited till they were 8 weeks then she has been at the garden centre at least 4 months.:(

I've never seen a rescue bun there before, only babies but I guess they thought that they could make a lot of money by taking in a pg doe, selling the babies, £40 each I think and then selling mum.

Oh I wish I had room. I would be happy to go get her if someone was willing to take her on.

Have felt like  all day thinking about her.

Welcome to the club. In the Netherlands most pet stores and dedicated garden centres sell rabbits and hutches that would be too small for mice! I can't go in them anymore because it is so depressing I just start shouting at the managers/employees and make a scene in my dodgy Dutch.

I finally gave up with my local pet store when I went in there and they were selling a giant (obviously alone, unneutered and with no suitable housing for sale) and two six-week old buns:shock: The manager had no idea why I was so cross despite my attempts to be reasoned. He is such an a-hole. I made a pointed statement that I will never go there again because of it. All you can do I'm afraid -if you buy them some other poor bun will replace it and so the cycle of evil continues.

Have strength and give your buns a treat!

which garden centre is it?

My latest bun was from a garden centre. I went in for food and she was quite literally the only bun in there and I was told she was 9months + old which turned out to be correct.

I hate to think how long she'd have been in there as I know they get cute young buns in alot.

I love her lots - she's wonderful! And much enjoying my garden right now and keeping the hoodini bunny in his place.

:D I'm sure whoever takes this bun will find she's a darling too. I'd love to have her but mine isn't speyed so I imagine it'd be a problem with clashing attitudes. I had my little boy de-balled as it was safer.

 I think you live quite near me. Moss End Garden Centre (bewtween Bracknell and Maidenhead) sell lots of good specialist hays e.g. Oxbow and they don't sell animals.

I'll be going to the farm to get some farm hay in the near future - if you want to split a bale, pm me.

if I can get her will anyone be able to find her a home?

Whilst it is really sad that a bunny of this age is in a shop being sold alone I do not think it is a good idea to get her and try to rehome her. She would be taking up rescue space that is needed for bunnies who are being neglected whereas she is somewhere safe and fed and watered.

Agreed

Agree, while it is sad, and if you can take the bun and keep her by all means do it. But if she were to take up a rescue place a bun in greater need may have to be turned away.

I actually find it a breath of fresh air that garden centers still keep the bunnies even though they are passed the "cute baby" stage. I have heard plenty of rumours about shops that "dispose" of animals they cant sell. While living in the garden center is not ideal, at least the bunny is being cared for. Someone will want her and give her the home she deserves, try not to worry.
