The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Cleaning Bottoms?

Hi all!

I was giving Minstrel her grooming last night and when I checked her underside she's a bit dirty - very urine stained and a little bit of poo.

She's normally very clean and just requires a little comb, but I just want to know what's the best way to clean her? I didn't do anything last night as I'd already been brushing her for over an hour plus giving her a haircut (she was not impressed ) and she was starting to get fidgety.

Hubby has said he will help me tonight, but he is absolutely terrified of hurting her and frightening her. Would it best to just comb out her underside, trim away some of the fur (which I myself am wary of :?) or wash that area????

Thanks

I would recommend just some luke warm water and bathing it and drying.
Have you asked the vet about some Rearguard if she is getting a dirty bottom, just to be on the safe side?

When you clean the part that's wet, rub it w/ your finger so the urine come out. Any parts that is matted after it's dry, has to be cut w/ a electric razor. Don't use scissor because it can cut their skin, as their skin is closely glue to the fur.

All good points about cleaning but if it was me I would be trying to find out why she was getting dirty and would try and prevent it. Do you change her litter tray daily? Is she doing excess caecotrophs? Could she possibly be overweight and unable to clean herself effectively?

I'm not trying to have a go or say you are doing a bad job (you have noticed she's not as clean as normal so you are obviously doing really well) I'm just trying to point out some stuff that may be happening which are really easy to sort out. Good luck with the washing

what is rearguard and how does it work? :p

It's a bottle of liquid stuff with a sponge on the end that you get from your vet to help prevent flystrike by applying it to your buns back end. I personally choose not to use it as I don't like my buns ingesting more chemicals than necessary. If you keep their living area clean, changing litter trays daily and get their diet right so they don't produce excess caecotrophs then there shouldn't be any need to use rearguard.

Flystrike is most common where a rabbit has a dirty bum or has been sat in urine giving him/her wet fur but it can also occur if the bun has an open wound. This time of year is is a good idea to check your bun for signs of all 3 daily as there are lots of flies around to lay eggs.
