Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
My poor rescue bun funnyface has developed molar spurs and an abscess, I have read up on these and the outcome just doesnt seem good at all. I feel a little let down by my vets as I was told he had slight spurs and it was nothing to worry about. The last time he went for a myxi jab the vet never bothered to look again , if I had known that they could potentionally lead to a fatal abscess I would have made them check again. I feel such a bad bun mum. He as been in the vets for 3 days had the spurs removed, xray and pain relief and as much of the abscess cleaned out, but the vets cannot see where the abscess is or how big it is from the xray. There is a lump on the jaw and when squeezed the pus came out. He only weighs just under 2 and now home he isnt eating much at all. Trying all I can to made him eat weetabix, bananas, porridge, strawberrys, bananas... Really surprised at vet as when he was in for 3 days they were trying to feed him broccolli, carrots, hay etc and syringe recovery. I had given them a bag of his favorite foods, bananas etc and they only fed him that when I called. I then went to visit to bring all his other favorites. They couldnt even spell banana on his progress sheet!!! Sorry I sound so awful!

Question is does anybody know of a vet in the Beds, Bucks, Herts area that can help. The vets will not refer me after I have finished the course of Baytril, but I want to take him as soon as he has perked up and has gained some weight but am having trouble finding anybody nearby. I just wished I lived in Harrogate as there is a good one there!

Oh and does anybody know what else I can do to keep my bun going and eating. Nibbled a little bit tonight but not a lot and he has still a lot of pain relief in system so im worried that he wont eat when it wears off.

God, I bet I get no replies from this huge thread!!

Help with Feeding

My poor bun not eating picked at some bits but not a lot. Think pain relief injection has whorn off and is on metacam now. Tried Weetabix and now on porridge. I am giving recovery relief power mixed up every 3 hours, is that enough to keep her weight up, i just dont know what to do.

He will need about 100ml/kg/24 hours if Syringe Feeds is the only food you can get into him. It is best to feed little and often to achieve this

He may require stronger analgesia than just Metacam
Also Baytril is probably not going to be much help re the infection. My Vet would use a different abx, something like Depocillin or Ceporex.

Personally I would be on the phone to the Vet tomorrow morning and insist on a referal to a specialist

Good luck

Thanks very much, vets really not helpful, i learn more online than I do from them. Vet always seem so lovely but when you come away, you think hold on a minute.....??!

Funny only taking about 3mls every hour. Have to call later about a referral and rabbit vet on at 10am in Watford so can speak to him,

maybe he might take funny on and give stronger pain relief and antibiotic and maybe keep him in until the abscess gets smaller and he gets fatter! Because I dont think there is any other way (unless they gave me all the drugs and I did it myself)!! What does anybody think? Does that seem the best course of action until because I dont think he could have a tooth root op just yet.

Thanks so much, just need to wait another 40 minutes then I can call him......I wonder if he would import some Bicillin!

I never realised my vets were not rabbit savvy until now and they are a 24 hour emergency vets so they are so busy.

I just hope my next post on here is a positive one.

Thanks everybody for your comments. These forums really help.

Good luck, I hope he can help.

You could try some grated carrot for him, may be some chopped up herbs to tempt him too.

Thanks if only it was that easy! tried everything, syringe feeding the only thing that is keeping him going. My other rabbit has no sympaty for him just keeps trying to nick all his food, not even a little lick to say I have missed you!!

Just tried grated carrot finely chopped carrot top a small bit of grass all mixed up and just doesnt want to know. Stupid vets, stupid me. I just pray he picks up soon.

Guy is in today at Watford Medivet :) so will take bun down straight away not eating anything pain relief not enough I dont think. Hope he puts him on a stronger antibiotic.

Please don't blame yourself. We put our trust in vets to do the right thing. At least your are seeing Guy today. Let us know how you get on.

Hi, sorry I didnt really want to post anything until I had him back as the vet said the next 2 days are critical with the recovery of yet another anaesthesia in less than a week and I didnt want to jinx his recovery. Specially as he hasnt been eating at all really.

He said funny was really dehydrated and put him a on a drip straight away, and that was why he probably was not eating, called up again in the evening and he was eating loads of greens, but when I called this morning he was having to be syringe fed through the night again :( but nethertheless he was in surgery today having the abscess removed.

He told me that the xray from the other vets showed a tooth going into the lower jawbone that may be infected and 1 upper enlongated tooth but neither of which are uncommon.

The abscess stemed from the molar spur rubbing on the cheek and caused a pencil shaped abscess in his lower cheek. He didnt remove molar which is good and removed all of abscess from an incision on the outside of his face and is on strong antibiotics (not baytril!!!) so I hope they just dont upset his little tummy! They didnt need any beads and didnt leave wound open to keep cleaning because he said he removed enough tissue.

Im a little relieved it hadnt gone to the bone but I know secondarys are so so common. I just wonder how often he will need his molars trimming

Let this be a lesson to anybody who doesnt go to a rabbit savvy vets. I think when you take your bun for a 6 month myxi jab they should get a full bunny mot bottom to top, specially with the teeth! Or even when you take your bun for another problem they should have a little mot. The other vet knew he had a molar spur on the notes so why wasnt it checked when he was there for jabs etc recently?

Think I had better take my other bun to him. Reoccuring urine infections for the past year!! Been on and off baytril for ages and had xray and ultrasound this time last year.

I am just praying he gets through the this week.

I cant believe I have an accountancy exam tomorrow and next week and they just dont seem important anymore specially as I have done no study from all the worrying and tears!

Thanks for asking these forums help so much x

I am so pleased that Guy was able to find out the cause of the problem.

Sending vibes that your bunny is now on the road to recovery :)

I glad you have now found a vet who can help Funny (lovely name by the way). Sending Funny lots of recovery and eating vibes.

Very best wishes to Funny. Fingers crossed he's on the road to recovery now. Guy Carter has done work that's amazed me, but without wanting to sound negative, I've also known him play the hero, at a rabbits expense, so go with what feels right for you and Funny. :)
