  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Doxycycline..anyone?

Has anyone used this on rabbits as my vet has suggested it for syphillis than is particularly hard to cure?:?

Yes Jill I have used it for snuffles on Santa, it comes in the form of a tablet (ronaxan). My former vet used to use it frequently in rabbits including long term and says she never had a problem with it. I haven't heard of its use for syphillis but I have successfully used it in bunnies :)

I used to squish it into a slice of banana and it would disappear no problem

Now I tend to crush tablets in with a little water and a drop of echinacea and just syringe it. The echinacea makes it tasty and they seem to take it readily :)

Yes but not for syphillis
Its a Tetracycline

ETA its used in the treatment of syphillis in humans allergic to Penicillin

thnaks for replies
We have been using penicllin without success..so my vet got in touch with Bristol and this was their suggestion..I didn't know anything about this drug

normally Penicillin G works well in syphilis, has a culture been made to test sensitivity to Doxycycline ?

I've never used it in buns but my rattie had Ronaxan for a chest infection, and it's also given to people for skin conditions, acne etc, I had Doxycycline for that. Sorry that's probably not of any relevence at all!
