  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

syphilis

i was just wondering if anyone would be able to advise me about it?

I've booked buster into the vets tomorrow morning, his parts are red and swollen, i took him to a free rabbit clinic and the lady thought it was syphilis.

He's bonded with rusty and she's completely fine- i've just read that it can be passed on, and has a 6-8 week incubation time - so she's going aswell

Where could he have got it from? he's not been around another rabbit

What are the options on treating it?

what else could it be? he has no mouth ulcers or anything
:(

If it is Syphillis, it can be transferred from the mother at birth. That is how my Tinkerbell got it. A course of injections at the vets sorts it out.

He's never showed any signs of it before - which worries me.

It's not bothering him he's fine in himself.

I've heard penicllin clears it up

As Lily says it can be passed from Doe to kit at birth. It can remain dormant for years.
A course of Depocillin Injections should resolve the symptoms but relapses are possible.
