Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Sores above eyes

A friend of mine is taking her bunny back to the vet today with an eye problem. I thought I would ask if anyone has any suggestions on what could be causing the condition, as the vet isn't entirely sure. The bunny is a 10 month old unneutered male (have been told can't neuter until condition has cleared). A month 1/2 or so ago he started sneezing, mostly clear fluid, and has developed scabs and sores above both eyes. Otherwise very healthy, good weight, poos fine, coat lovely, fully vaccinated. He has had antibiotic eye drops for a full course and they did make some difference, but within a day of stopping his eyes look a bit red, with some discharge and the sores above the eyes are getting worse again. Any ideas anyone - things she coudl discuss with the vet ? Is it possible for bunnies to develop hay fever type allergies and the scabby areas are from rubbing his eyes ??

Having looked up the symptoms, yes it could ! It could easily also be the pneumoia type myxi. that i've jsut read bunnies who are vaccinated can get...snuffly, sneezy and a bit raspy breathed. They are quite rural and have lots of wild bunnies in the garden. I've advised her to talk about this to the vet when she takes him back today. What can this be treated with ? As it is viral is it a case of symptomatic treatment and boosting the immune system ?

Yes

Generally systemic antibiotics and anti-inflammatories are given plus topical eye treatments when necessary.

Well, she discussed the possibility of some type of myxo. illness and the vet is certain that it isn't that, but isn't entirely sure what it is ?! Obviously this is relayed information, but the infection appears to be in both eyelids, a condition more common in cats and dogs and it was reponsive to anti-b drops last time they were used. Any further ideas anyone /

Would it be possible to get some clear photos of the sore areas?
Also is he still sneezing?

Yes, I can try to, but won't be seeing them for quite a few days. I should have taken some today on my phone, the thought occurred to me then exited my brain shortly afterwards.
