  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Should I go to the vet or not?

Sorry for the really long post....

My bunny George is going through a heavy moult and although i keep brushing him and going over him with damp hands to help him along, he's constantly licking his fur.

The other day he was lying stretched out and would keep lying into different kept moving like he couldn't get comfortable. I gave him lots of tummy rubs and syringed lots of water into him. I even gave him some pinapple juice and made him run about. After 5 minutes or so he perked up and managed to nibble some greens. He's running about as normal now.

His eating is not as good as it usually is. He likes eating his pellets and is eating lots of hay. He's gone off his greens a bit and will only really nibble small amounts. He is eating though so its not like he's stopped altogether.

His poos are quite small and he occasionally he does a few normal sized ones that are strung together with fur.

Is this normal maulting behaviour and should I keep giving him lots of water and encouraging him to eat as much as possible or would a vet be able to help him better? As he is eating so you think he would need a gut stimulating injection?

Personally I think he would benefit from an abdominal examination by your Vet.
I'd take him tomorrow. In the meantime try to keep his fluids up and encourage as much hay eating as possible.
