Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Elephantiasis in Bunnies

Jane Parry

Young Bun
I went to my local farm and they have around 12 baby rabbits in 4 litters. One of the babies is 3 weeks old and he appears to have a form of elephantiais on the front of his head a bit like the elephant man. It is a large deformity of some kind above his nose on the front of his head. Whether it is a congenital birth deformity or a soft tissue growth (benign or otherwise) is not clear and the farmer is not sure. Has anyone else come across this and if so what issues could it cause to the bunny's health.

Thanks
Jane

Sorry I haven't come across this before. Has the bunny seen a vet? as I was thinking there is a chance it could be an abscess:?

I hope the bunnies aren't for sale at only 3 weeks.

I guess at only 3 weeks it is hard to say what the long term implications of such a growth would be. But a thorough vet check is a must for this poor little bunny

No, I'm glad to say that the little bun is not for sale, nor are the other ones of that age.

I've been going to the farm for years and had most of my buns from there and the farmer knows that I completely spoil them so I think he was pointing out little Elephant Bun in the hope that when he is big enough I would take him and give him a good home and lots of love.

I'm still in bits over Mopsy who I've recently lost though so I'm not sure I'm ready for another one and I was curious about Elephant Bun's condition. Otherwise his health seems good and he is very friendly.

Thanks for your help - I appreciate your quick reply.

Jane
