  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Not drinking after pair died...

Iris, my 4 year old Rex recently passed away and her bonded partner, Bonsley seems to be taking it pretty well. He's eating and moving around but he doesn't seem to be drinking. Could it be that he doesn't want to use the same water bottle that they both used together? How can I get him to drink?

I would supply a bowl as well, it could be that he is pining for her in which case you will need to get a friend for him quick

Since rabbits are not big water drinker, and you always want to encourage rabbits (or any other animals or human) to drink lots of water, a bowl does make them drink more water than a water bottle.

My bunny Monty passed away in Jan. 2008, his companion Minnie was acting normally for awhile, but then she got lonely after a month or 2, and sat at the gate that separate upstair from downstair everyday. It took me 9 mth. to bond her with her new companion Bernie.

It's very clear that your bun is reacting to the lost of Iris in stages. Did you let Bonsley to smell Iris for say 1/2 hr. before you remove her body? If not, he always wonder where she went and can be very psychologically damaging.

Get yourself a rehome bun at SPCA to refill the energy in your home, many rabbits are waiting for months in a small living area inside a rescue center, waiting for a good home.
All my current buns are from SPCA
