  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Watery eye

A friends little rabbit has had a watery eye for over a year and the vet keeps prescribing either fucithalmic or another type of eye drop.

Anyone got a similar problem?

Is it likely to be lifelong or is there any "cure"?

He has his tear ducts flushed again a few days ago.

Has he had skull radiographs to see if it is actually overgrown tooth roots
that are the primary cause of the problem ?

No I don't think he has.

I had a feeling it was probably teeth related tho'.

If tooth roots are the problem is extraction the only option?

Stella has this problem. Bother her eyes are runny. She has had her tear ducts flushed several times, once under GA, with no effect whatsoever (apart from upsetting her). She has had creams and drops which haven't worked (some have even made it worse).

As the only solution would be to take her teeth out (and I'm told this may not even solve it), the vet and I decided that we would leave it for now, as long as she doesnt get any worse. Bud cleans her eyes up for her (he's a good husbun:love:) and if you could see her now, you wouldnt even know she has the problem (we discovered it before Bud came to live with us).

I suppose it depends on how bad the problem is and if the bun is suffering - I know before Buddy was around to sort her out, her eyes would get really sore, but now she is fine.

The vet said it's not likely to go away (although he said he has seen it in a couple of cases), and as long as she is ok in herself and its not getting worse, just to monitor her.

Hope your friends bun is ok :rabbit2:
