Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can anyone tell me what parasite is affecting my bun?

HoppingBinky

She's a British giant that's one and a half years old has a huge hutch which i clean out every two days. She's not eating as much as she did previously but is still hopping around and getting into mischief. She's just started moulting but I noticed about a week ago that she had a small bald patch at the back of her neck. There's lots of scurvy, small red scabs and her fur is coming out in clumps. It's now spreading down her back bone with new bald patches popping up every day. I haven't noticed her scratching or pulling her fur out. Due to lack of money as i have just come out of hospital the vet won't see her unless i can pay straight away. My boyfriend has got me some insecticidal spray to use which i have done this afternoon following the directions carefully. Will this help or is veterinary treatment essential?:(

Sounds as though she has mites.
Does the 'insecticidal spray' you have used contain Ivermectin ?

Mites are often a secondary symptom of another underlying health problem. So really your Rabbit does need to be seen by a Vet. Dental problems may be a possibility. The reduced eating and mites are indicative of Dental problems. Mites occur in Dental Rabbits that are unable to groom themself due to having a sore mouth.

If you are in receipt of any DSS Benefits you could take Bun to a RSPCA Hospital/PDSA/Blue Cross.

I wondered if they were mites, the spray has permethrin 0.5% in it. The bottle says it kills fleas, lice and common external parasites. Will this help with the problem? Unfortunately I'm not on benefits just off work sick and i don't get paid until the 27th. I feel so bad for her.

Personally I would not use a product containing permethrin as it is not considered to be very effective and is less safe than alternatives such as Ivermectin or Selamectin.

I am sure if you explained your situation to your Vet they would agree to you paying in instalments on this occasion. If your Rabbit is eating less this may lead to further complications of reduced gut motility or even GI stasis. It will be far more expensive to deal with that than to get treatment for mites and a Dental examination.

Hi the spray you have used is good for killing lice and fleas but not good enought for killing mites and shouldn't be used on broken skin , if you dont have enough money to pay a vet just now you can get a spot on treatment that contains ivomec at pets at home . It will give you some time to get some money together so she can get her teeth checked if needed ;) . What changes have you noticed about her feeding habits ?
p.s i would leave at least a week between the spray and spot on so they dont react with each other ;)

I have managed to get some funds together and I've just come back from the vet. She started to get worse this morning with runny poo and not eating, my boyfriend came round to find me in tears so he lent me the money to get her sorted.Bless him. The vet said the mites were well established and gave her an injection to kill them, she has to go back twice more every 10 days for further injections. The vet also gave me some fibreplex to administer and reduce her food intake and increase her hay. Apparently mites affect rabbits that have reduced immunity which i didn't know.Hopefully she will now improve, i will get some more spot on though to keep other bugs at bay. Thanks everyone for your advice it's been a great help.:D
