  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Newspaper bad for health?

Mickaxx

New Kit
I have newspaper at the bottom of my hutch.
and, my rabbit has taken to chewing it.
Is this bad?
Or is it ok?
Help.

It depends how much they swallow. If they swallow small bits then it's not really a problem. If they are eating quite a bit then you will need to remove it and replace it with something else.

it's not good in long term. As the ink on the newspaper is a chemical, you can wipe the ink off w/ your hand, thus, long term exposure to the chemical can cause cancer

Its good to see your buns digesting the news
Yeah large bits isn't the best for bun. Winston's the same so no paper in our house for him to reach anyway

I believe most newspaper printers use soy ink which is made from soya, although the other additives are the same as the petroleum based :) I'd be more worried that too much paper would cause impaction if ingested.

best to avoid newspapers for rabbits and rodents, because will never know about the origin of the ink, no good anyway...
