  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poorly Bun and Hello everyone!

Young Bun
Hi everyone, i'm quite new on here. I,ve been reading info on the forum for ages but only recently registered. Anyway to cut a long story short, this morning I found my male rabbit (recently neutered) had managed to 'break out' of his pen and was happily sitting in with my female. (they live in separate pens in a large shed) They have met before and have lived next to each other for quite a while. Anyway my first thought was to check for injuries and my poor boy, Smokey has a really swollen winky! There's no blood or obvious bite wounds but it is really swollen. I assume it's either from Misty biting him or due to excessive humping! I will take him to vets tomorrow but just wondered whether any one can offer me some assurance that he will be OK and will recover. My o/h has been putting bolts etc on the lid of his pen to make sure he stays put now. Poor Smoke always seems to be getting in to trouble.

Hello

I expect he has gotten over amorous !!
Is your Doe spayed ? If not and if Smokey was only neutered within the last couple of weeks she may be pregnant as Bucks remain fertile for 2-4 weeks after castration.

Hi, thanks for replies. No she's not spayed yet. Smokey was neutered 6 weeks ago so hopefully not still fertile!

Took Smokey to vets today and she gave him metacam and baytril. Swelling has gone down alot today and he's eating, weeing, pooing etc. Seems fine in himself. Got to take him back tomorrow.
