  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I was trying to explain to someone about stasis today, they asked if it was like bloat and I couldnt answer properly.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is please?

Stasis means the guts stopped moving (is in stasis). Bloat means the gut is full of gas. They're not necessarily two seperate things as bloat can effect gut movement too. Stasis doesn't necessarily mean full of gas though :)

if a bun has bloat, he can't be force feed except infacol to reduce the gas inside his stomach

If a bun has GI stasis but no gas, you can forcefeed him

unless he has a blockage?

bloat can be blockage.

bloat can cause by gas, which can be fix via infacol or using a tube to suck the gas and other substance out

but bloat can also cause by physical blockage, such as a furniture fiber or carpet fiber to block the intestine

Bloat is when the stomach fills with gas,the caecum can also be filled by gas, this is known as caecal tympany and can sound like when you pick up a hot water bottle with some water in it.Its caused by the ingested food stuff fermenting when the gut stops moving and creating gas which fills the stomach and intestines,so it can follow on from stasis.
Infacol [simethicone] works by breaking up big gas bubbles into smaller ones which are easier to get rid of.
I havent heard of using a Flatus tube for bloat in rabbits and surely if one was used the contents wouldnt be sucked out for fear of prolapsing the bowel

my bridge bun Monty passed away due to bloat after he chewed a piece of furniture. The fiber blocked the intestine and his stomach expands as the incoming food among other things has nowhere to go:(
