Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

rearguard or spot on?

My rabbit hates being picked up and hides for an hour if i do. and so i don't want to stress him out by looking at his bottom everyday.

I have heard that some fly prevention sprays can be harmful to the skin and when digested.

Looking into getting some nets for the hutch and run. Does anyone know of any good nets that will allow him to still see out? (and arent too expensive as he has a ig run). anyway, nets on their own wont be enough because he runs round the garden when we are out every day and we have to leave the door open for him.

One of mine doesn't like to be picked up but I do her bum checks each day as quick as I can. I stroke her nose to lead her into a false sense of security, lean right over her and then lift her against me so she feels secure and slip her down into a "baby" position then check her and let her go.

Even if I use rearguard I still do bum checks "just in case". Some of the other things I have seen I don't fancy using as they can affect nervous system e.g. spot on and they only last a couple of weeks.

I use mosquito netting stapled on their run etc from Lidl. You can also buy cheap net curtains.

your rabbits look lovely, need to get some picks on here.

like you say, most of the sprays are evil. i looked in the local shop, not that i agree with petshops, and the only one i could find said dont use on cats or dogs as it can kill them! i worked oout that only spoton or rearguard are safe, but noone really knows do they. i agreee that no treatment is better, i will get some net curtains to cover the run and hutch. i still want to check him every day but he has grown such trust in us. he wouldnt even let us touch him before. in fact he hid for 6 months! so now picking him up every day would really upset him, they are wild animals at the end of the day, but i know his health comes first.
