Worried about archie. Update, been to vets

foofoo

Alpha Buck
He had an abscess removed from under his ear 3 weeks ago and he hasn't been the same bunny since. One day he seems okay the next he hardly moves and picks at his food  I can't even get him to come out of his cage just now so I can give him his pain killer, I don't know if his teeth are starting to give him trouble or if its his abscess wound so I'm taking him to the vets in the morning.
He hates me picking him up and it seems like every time I do or take him to the vets he becomes more withdrawn. Sorry for going on but I feel a bit useless because nothing I do seems to help him and I don't like seeing him like this

Oh dear, poor Archie. Hopefully the vet visit tomorrow will provide some answers and help his recovery.

Loads of vibes for him.

He's on 0.3ml twice a day, I'm not sure if its actually helping or not :?

Sorry, should have said that its metacam he's getting

Think he's 2.8kg but he's lost some weight and its the cat metacam he's having

Then no wonder its not doing anything !!
He is not receiving a therapeutic dose.

I am not a Vet so I cannot tell you what dose to give Archie.
But please contact your Vet and request he/she consult the latest recommended dose-rate for Rabbits. It is now up to 0.6mg/kg/24 hours. Or it can be given in two 12 hourly doses of 0.3mg/kg.

Archie is only receiving a dose of 0.15mg every 12 hours. At a weight of 2.8kg he could have 0.84mg every 12 hours which is 1.7ml every 12 hours.

PLEASE CONSULT YOUR VET BEFORE INCREASING THE DOSE !!

Right, now I am angry. I didn't know this and thought that the amount I was told to give him would be giving him enough pain relief.
Thanks for that information, I'll be having a word with the vet tomorrow about the dosage. No wonder I've got a depressed bunny!

Sadly many Vets seem unaware of the new dose rate recommendations for Metacam use in Buns

Thanks for the vibes everyone :) I'm pretty upset that he's been in pain this whole time and I didn't think to question the dosage he was given

I'm not surprised hun, but hopefully you will be able to sort him soon when you've talked to your vet. Sending him a big cuddle & nose rub for when he feels better xx

It really is not your fault. Why would you question it. Your Vet may genuinely not be aware of the relatively recent changes to the recommended maximum dose rates. It used to be thought that only a dose of 0.2mg/kg/24 hours could be given. But it was realised that this just did not provide adequate analgesia.
In the USA they still only use 0.2mg/kg/24 hrs but Rabbit specialist here now state that a dose of up to 0.6mg/kg/24 hours is 'safe'.

I was at the vets this morning with archie and his dose of metacam has been increased from 0.3ml every 12 hours to 1ml, still don't know if this is going to be enough but I hope that its making him feel a bit more comfortable.

The vet told me to give him the metacam every 24hrs but I'll give him it every 12.
His abscess wound has gone down in size so I hope thats a good thing :) I talked with the vet about starting both archie and fudge on depocillin for pastuerella but she hasn't used it before with rabbits so needs to do some research about it first. And fudge had a nasal sample taken for culture and sensitivity testing for his snuffles and he's peeing a lot so I've to take a pee sample from him to be checked.
I'm just glad theres so much info on this forum otherwise I wouldn't know to ask about these things and a lot of the time some of the vets there don't recommend treatment for things that need treating!

My Vet frequently uses Depocillin in Rabbits. If your Vet would like to contact my Vet I'll PM you the details :)

At least the Vet was prepared to listen re the dose of Metacam and did not just do the 'I'm the Vet, dont tell me how to do my job' routine.

Sending vibes for your poorly Bunnies

xx

Thank you :) I'll wait and see what she comes up with first, I don't want to give the impression that I don't trust her as she hasn't dismissed me when I've asked for things to be done. Thanks for the offer, I will PM you if I need your vets details. Unfortunately archie hasn't been eating properly since the vet trip yesterday even with having more metacam  I hope that its just down to the stress and he'll start eating again soon.
