Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Zymox for Lop Ears

I had made a post previously about caring for lop ears, but no one seemed to suggest anything to give a bun on a regular basis.

I spoke to my vet yesterday, and since Mimi has some build-up in his ears (still weird saying that ), she recommended I use Zymox biweekly. I just fill up his ears until it fills up the base, massage the base of the ear, then clear it all out with cotton balls.

Has anyone done this before? Are there any bad effects from doing this biweekly?

I have several Lops and I never use any ear cleaning products on them as a matter of routine.I check their ears regularly and only use a bit of warm Olive Oil to clear out a wax build-up if there is one.
Sometimes putting cleaning potions in the ears just stimulates more wax production !!!

But you need to take your Vets advice as a Vet I am not

I think I trust you more than my vet! I think I'll hang onto the Zymox and only use it if I see waxy build-up. I'm not a big fan of over-medicating, so maintenance drugs/potions are not really my thing. This sounds like a reasonable solution.

Thanks!

i don't use anything on petals ears, but your bun has had a build up so it could be something he's prone to and just need to clear out when needed.
