They are born with hardly any spikes and a layer of fluid covering them, mum removes the fluid once they are born and the spikes start to come through after about 2 hrs, they are just like hairs to start off with and get more prickly as they grow... they are quite sharp now but i've been handling them for about a week so they know me and don't spike up very often :)

awwwww i really want a hedgehog!!! What are they like as pets? Do you let them outside in runs or anything? I guess its abit like having a specialist hamster as they are nocturnal?

OMG how fascinating. Ive never really seen baby hedgehogs and didnt know you could really keep them as pets. And wow, what long tongues:shock:

They are the funniest little things! What do they eat when they are older? Are they African ones?

I'd love to have a European hedgehog in our garden, but it isn't safe enough with the pond and foxes and badgers digging holes under the fence.
