 Just been browsing the site and notice how more and more people are using this site [including me]:oops:for advice on there bunnies health problems as there vet doesn't have a clue or isn't offering enough help. I feel seen off really. As we all pay near enough the same money to see a vet yet half of them aren't that clued up on bunny rabbits. Yes they have experience but its not there field but still charge full price

I know it may seem a pointless moan to some but i just feel really :evil:

As at the end of the day if you had something wrong with your eye say... you wouldn't be expected to be seen by a dentist to get it sorted out! or if you a a broken leg you wouldn't go to a nurologist to get them to operate on it.... I just feel sorry for the bunnies out there not being seen by vets who know there stuff so to speak. And just want to say a big thank you to the people of RU admin and fellow RU members as if it wasn't for this site i would have lost one or possibly both my bunnies a while ago... and also paid silly amounts of money on pointless tests which weren't needed.

well i do have to agree it really is vital to get a good rabbit savvy vet many people dont realise rabbits are classed as exotics and extra training is nessacery. our rabbit savvyvet even has his own house bun :) x

I agree, although Caroline at our vets is pretty rabbit savvy ;)

Well she isn't bad but the last time i went in she had never heard of papya tablets and also she never new about allen and page rabbit food. But she did say she may have a look on here some time as i seem to be getting some good info :lol:

I totally agree. I'm very lucky to have a very good vet. They have just updated their website to include lots of useful information on rabbit care and diseases. :)

She was the one who spotted Jazz's abcess when it was mega tiny! I think all those vets up there are always promoting excel  my buns say no thanks

 they sure do love excel.....anyone would think it is the only brand of rabbit food :lol: allen & page all the way for my boys

At the risk of playing devil's advocate, vets are really probably equivalent to a GP ie. jack of all trades, master of none. They know enough about most common types of animals to 'see them through' but unless it's a cat or a dog, don't see enough of the other types of animal to gain sufficient experience. So I don't think you can necessarily blame the vets in all circumstances. (I'm not a vet nor do I have a vet who is family or friend:D)

However, what they SHOULD do is refer a case if they have insufficient knowledge. Not just throw Baytrill or whatever at it in the hopes that the bunny will get better. It's very wrong of a vet to treat something when he or she doesn't really know what they're treating. They should either refer to a specialist or contact a specialist for advice.

But again, in defence of some vets, how many people (aside from us lot on this forum) actually bother taking a bunny to the vet? So the vets never get to see many to gain experience. It's a catch 22 situation for them.

But I totally agree with the title of your thread. A MASSIVE thank you to all the peeps on this forum who willingly give advice and offer support to those who ask. You're all fab!
