Poor BiBi has his eye removed :(

Hi everyone

Some of you might have come across pics of my BiBi in this forum in the past. Unfortunately, he recently had a painful eye infection, glacoma and the whole eye was swollen. This is most probably due to tooth root infection...

He went to the hospital today and I was given the hard decision of operation or put him to sleep. After a tearful phonecall with my sister, we decided to give the op a go.

The little fighter stopped breathing during surgery and had to be ventilated manually according to the vet. He came back thankfully and is now recovering.

For the next few weeks, the small hollow eye socket needs to be flushed out twice and he needs to take antibiotics and painkillers. He might look very odd at the moment but everyone in the family still loves him a lot and wish him well.

Has anyone else here have the same procedure done to their bunny?

Thanks. :(

Bless little Bibi i will send vibes for a full recovery. If you PM Elve (she doesn't often come out of General Chat) She had a bunny that underwent an eye removal x

Please give BiBi a nose rub from me - he is one of my fave buns on here, and I am sure his eye will make him all that more adorable!

Hope he recovers well. love Andrea, Lola and Lucy x x x

Thank you all for your well wishes. I'll take him back to the bunny specialist on Monday for a checkup. I have to say it's heartbreaking seeing him with a wound and I have to control my emotions to give him medication and clean his wound.
:(

Hopefully he's going to pull through!

so sorry to hear about Bibi but it sounds like he's through the worst. i have been through a similar expereience with a bun with an abscess behind the eye and it was also removed. She coped so well and recovered very quickly. i think its harder for us as dealing with the wound takes a lot of courage! you are doing well Tom and if you need any advice please contact me.
hugs to Bibi x

Sending lots of healing vibes to Bibi.

One of our first rabbits had this done and tooth removed (6 years ago), unfortunately he was very weak and never made it through the night. I am still haunted that maybe we put him through too much and we were not experienced enough. RIP Bubba.

I said I would never put a bunny through this again, however after joining this site and reading the success stories I would definitely consider it. We are more experienced now too.

Well done for looking after him, you sound like you have a good vet too.

Please give Bibi a big kiss from me and Brian - hope he is well on the mend soon the little cutie pie xx

I just saw Bibi's picture on your website and he is extremely cute! Sending tons of vibes to Bibi. :)

Hello there.

We have one bunny (our very first) who has just had his second eye removed and to be honest, it wasn't such a hard decision. He had the other out about a year ago and seemed okay, got around no probs. But, in recent months he'd stopped laying down or relaxing and his eye had got much more taught (he had glaucoma and a cataract). The pressure in his eye was tested and it was high, so he was either in pain or at least some discomfort.

Well since his second eye has gone, he's like a new rabbit. He loves life so much more and enjoys running around and lying down and really sleeping like he used to. It's our old Barney - he's back.

Get well vibes for Bibi, I am sure that he'll know that it was the best thing to happen to help him have a better life, and I am sure that he will be much more comfortable now.

Helen

Thanks everyone so much for your well wishes and stories about your bunnies. They really made me more confident about BiBi's recovery. He has been jumping and running around like the BiBi of old. Our vet is right, he feels a lot less pain now than he used to before the operation. He's getting a check up tomorrow and hopefully it'll be all good news!

Thanks again!

My Stitch only had one eye and was blind in his other, we dont know why his first eye was removed and by the time I adopted him his eye had fluffed back over and it didn't stop him being happy. He was such a happy cheeky monkey :D

I also adopted Stevie a week ago and he gauged his eye out beginning of March and needed it removed, although it still looks a little sore, it's getting better everyday and fur is starting to grow back over it.

At this point I'm only bathing his eye once a day, I'm not sure what his care was like during the first month but your vets sound fab so I'm sure their advise is good.

In terms of Stevie's happiness, he is very happy, love binkying so I'm sure Bibi will be feeling better very soon :D

Get well soon Bibi

was going to say talk to vicky!! i see she has already posted... yes stitch was a happy bunny despite hardly being able to see as he lived with me before going to his forever home with vicky. also my mums 10yr old thoshe has both her eyes they are cloudy and she has poor vision (she is in no pain and it is age realted (age10yrs) so no op is needed but she is happy enough regardless of not being fully sighted. x
