  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

does anyone know roughly how much a vet would charge to clip an extremely matted long haired rabbit and would it need to be done under anaesthetic?

thanks for replying :) i think this particular rabbit would need to go under it is in a shocking state. the people concerned told me their vets quote and i thought maybe it was excessive but seems not. the problem is they won't pay it

Unfortunately you pay for the time they are under and cutting a coat would be very time consuming.

It is possible to do it by hand if you know what you are doing. Fuzzy was matted solid when he arrived and it took me 5 days to get it all off but at least it avoided a GA :)

i'm trying to help them, managed to get quite a bit off yesterday and have left them brushing and snipping what becomes free then will help them again in a few days-it is completely matted and apparently has been like this for over a year . if they do not help me help them i feel my only option will be to report them. i would have liked to have taken it to my vets and paid to have it done but have my own bunnies to think of and it would take a big chunk out of my own bunny fund
