Poll - DO VETS NEED MORE TRAINING FOR TREATING RABBITS?

Do vets need more training, to enable rabbits to be treated correctly?

Just a quick poll to see how many members are dissatisfied with the veterinary treatment (as a result of poor veterinary training) they have received either recently or in the past.

Do vets need more training for treating rabbits.....

Please vote for the relevant "yes" answers if you feel your rabbit was not given the proper / adequate treatment, if your vet was not rabbit savvy.. or if you feel that the loss of your rabbit could have been avoided if the vet in question had received more rabbit specific training. Even if you have not directly had any unfortunate experiences with a vet... please give your opinion

This is in conjunction with JacksJane's post regarding taking action to get vets the right training - and our bunnies the right treatment.

It doesn't have to be your current vet... vets in general, past experiences included...etc

You havent put a pole with the thread

But I am happy with oggies new vet, he seemed very caring and was very helpful.

However, Im not pleased with what was mopys vet and is now andys vet.
To me, the are over priced and dont give any help.
Basically they are a pile of ****.

They're probably making it now, I think you need to post first then edit to make the poll.

I have used 5 different vets, and only now have I found one I am truly happy with and trust. Lets see:

First vet couldn't even hold a rabbit properly, he dropped poor Gussy and asked why I had bought him in just because he hadn't eaten that morning

Second vet told me I shouldn't bother getting Sweetpea spayed or bonding her as it probably wouldn't work anyway

Third one didn't listen when I said that Gus had Syphilis, told me I was keeping them in dirty conditions and it was hutch burn

Forth one was good even though he only treated all the buns for syphilis when I insisted but the rest at the practice were terrible and he only worked 6 months of the year!

So finally I have found a vet I am happy with! Surely it shouldn't be that hard :?

That is not to mention the vets I know of who have made existing conditions much much worse with inappropriate "treatment" or have failed to pick up on simple signs etc etc

I voted No as my current vet is great

i trust my vets sometimes their great but i did have to demand a blood test with Lilli-Mai because they were just going to send her home saying she was ok blood results showed up that there was something wrong afterall

I haven't voted in the poll because none of the options quite cover it for me :?

I am happy with my vet, she is pretty good, an accomplished surgeon, will listen to me and will take advice from experts if she isn't sure. But she isn't an expert or a bunny specialist, she's just a vet who sees a reasonable amount of bunnies and is happy to learn. Some of the treatments I've suggested she hasn't tried before, but she's gone away and done her research and has come back to me and we have tried things - keeping in contact by phone so that she can be updated on how it's going throughout and thus learn in the process.

the vets practice i use on the Hagley Road all seem to be excellent with rabbits and ive even heard the receptionist say she keeps rabbits of her own, when they are closed i have to go to the Halesowen branch and of the five or so times ive been there only one vet ive seen im not keen on to look after my rabbits or chippies..

Even the vets now further down the hagley road (which is a PDSA by day) had an excellent vet who saved my Alvin when he had stasis

One Vet really let me down and i refuse to go back.

Current Vet is OK, its the Emergency service i arent happy with.

More training!!!!

If previously vets have let you down - then would a yes for more training be appropriate?

I think the confusion is because your title asks "Satisfied with your vet?" suggesting that the poll is about whether you're happy with your particular vet or not, and then the poll asks whether "vets" need more training - as a general question.
I'm happy with 90% of my vets, there's the odd person I've seen with no knowledge in the animal I've taken in (normally chinchillas or rats rather than the rabbits, but still sometimes clueless bunny-wise) but other than that they're willing to listen and do more research, have their own knowledge, there was a dental expert there a while ago who had bunnies of his own too I think - so most of my experience has been good.

Best way is probably to change the thread title, just edit your first post and change it. "Do vets need more training with rabbits?" or something perhaps?

I didn't know what to vote, as I don't really slot in to a catergory.

I wasn't happy with my previous vet, and although I don't think they killed Joey, they just didn't know what was wrong with him. I will always question if maybe I had got him to a better vet he would eb alive or maybe he was just to ill :?

I have changed to a new vet, but haven't actually seen the new vet yet! I have spoken to him on the phone and appears to know his stuff. I'm just having problems getting answer out of any of them, yesterday left 3 messages for a vet to call me back as Alfie had x rays on Saturday night and I still don't know what they showed up! Just been given 5 lots of meds to give him.

PPhheeewww done it! I'm at work and trying not to get caught out :D RU is addictive... (understatement!) Having to rush posts and polls.. not good.. Makes me look like a dipstick!:lol::lol: Less haste more speed?? (I think that's the saying!)

If it's a previous vet you weren't happy with you could vote for more training... I have changed the title as I made it sound as tho I am asking about current vets... I mean in general, do people think (from any experiences they have had) that vets need more training...

I have confused everyone me thinks (slinks away, winding her neck back in )

The vet I use now is as rabbit savvy as you can get but I am getting more and more to thinking that if I had been using said practice last year when I thought Scrappy "wasn't quite right", she may well still have been here ... or at least have been diagnosed with something rather than just dying of 'cause unknown'. I also had a bunny being treated for mites, I know now that the mites were a clue to a more serious underlying condition. She just died also. I have to take some of the blame for 'not realising' but I think in both cases investigations should have been done. It could have been something so simple that could have been put right in both cases.

I use Harcourt-Brown's in Harrogate.

I've not needed to have an out of hours emergency appointment yet as they do an open surgery Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, luckily they have been at the right times so far. The emergency cover is provided by themselves and not an outside practice.
