  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Bunny get very stressed by meds

Alfie is on 5 different types of meds for a possible heart problem.

Getting the tablets into him is becoming very stressful, and we are concerned this surely can't be good for his little heart

I have tried hiding it in food but he just nibbles round the tablet, we have tried crushing in and dissolving them in water and syringing into him.

We can get the syringe in but he struggles alot and gets himself all worked up. Afterwards his breathing gets so fast and he sits all hunched.

I'm ringing the vets at 9am as want to talk with them about this but has anyone else got any other tricks I could try that won't stress him out?

I think you need to wait til you speak with the actual Vet rather than the VN as maybe some of Alfie's meds are unnecessary.

If he is to stay on some of them then perhaps giving them via injection would be less stressful for him.

Do you wrap him in a towel before syringing oral meds?
How many times a day is he having them?

Thanks for replying Jane didn't want to PM as I saw you are poorly.

He has to have them twice a day. 7am and 7pm.

Metacam twice a day
Pancur in the morning.
One of the tablets are twice a day, then another is just in the morning, then the final one is in the evening on alternate days.

We have tried wrapping him in a towel but he struggles so much and gets himself all worked up which makes his breathing worse. I will be ringing the vets as soon as they open and will be demanding a vet speak to me regarding his results even if I have to pay for a telephone call!
